Davenportage 2019

Davenportage 24.09.2020

All, Davenportage 2019 is set to go! Sunday October 27th is the 6th anniversary of the madness. With five straight years of perfection I'm confident that this year the weather gods will unleash their wrath... or maybe not. Here are a few important notes for participants. Davenportagers Please let me know as soon as possible which elements you plan to participate in (the portage is mandatory; the run and paddle are optional) and if you are bringing anyone with you.... Generally canoes will be provided for you unless you can bring your own and arrange the logistics. Portagers will should meet at Étienne Brûlé park at 11:30 am. Please bring a backpack and load it with non-perishable food items, as much as you can carry, for the portage. We will make a drop-off at the Yorkville fire station when we stop for a break in the area. But remember, don't overdo it!... a canoe and a heavy pack will wear you down. Think about bringing something to pad your shoulders. It's not the weight of the canoe or the distance that will get you but your shoulders. (Maybe they are related.) Bring water. The portage takes just over 5 hours including breaks. Plan to stick around for a well deserved fireside beer after the event. Paddlers We are planning to meet at the Don River put-in starting at 6:15 am and getting the final canoe in the water by 7:00 am. The exact location of the put-in will be sent out the week before the event but aim for the Evergreen Brickworks. Again, we will provide canoes and gear but you are welcome to bring your own if you can manage the logistics. Depending on the weather, the paddle can range in difficulty from beginner to advanced. We will let you know the expected conditions a few days before the event so you can make a final decision. It usually take 4 - 4.5 hours of steady paddling. Runners We are planning to meet at the starting point at 4:00 am for a 4:10 am start. The exact location of the start will be sent out the week before the event. Please wear a head-lamp as much of the running is on poorly marked, undulating trails through the woods. The Davenportage run is a tough, fun, 15 - 20 km trek (depending on where the paddling starts) with no aid stations and takes roughly 2 hours. All for now. Cheers...
