Air-source heat pumps are now eligible for grants. A ductless system is a great way to get efficient heating and cooling into areas of your home that are not covered by your primary heating system. Full details can be found here: https://www.uniongas.com/homereno

Energy evaluations are not all fun and games. I met this fellow last summer and saw him again last week when I returned to do a follow-up evaluation.

I got my first file under the new rating system complete. First one within Green Communities Canada. The new format not only shows you an estimate of the energy consumption of your house, it shows you how some of your habits impact it.

Starting April 1, the Energuide for Houses system is changing. Instead of rating the house on a scale of 0 - 100, the rating will be based on the energy consumption of the house. The problem with the present system is that a large house can have a rating as good as a much smaller house, which uses much less energy, because the rating does not take the size of the house into consideration. The new rating estimates the actual energy consumption of the house, so a larger house... will rate worse than an identically constructed smaller house. The rating also includes the score your house would achieve if it were built to current energy efficiency standards. http://www.nrcan.gc.ca//ef/housing/home-improvements/18392

$18 for 8 LED bulbs at the local big box store! That's only $2.25 each. LED's use a fraction of the electricity of an incandescent bulb, work in the cold (unlike CFL's), last the longest and do not contain hazardous materials if they break or when it is time to dispose them (again, unlike CFL's).
