This is the story of the Royal Air Force training base in Medicine Hat during WWII. This base was located at the site of the current Regional Airport. 2000 pilots were trained. 50 were killed in training accidents and are buried in the field of honour, Hillside Cemetary, behind the Cross of Sacrifice. This fascinating story of the gallant lives of our war heroes can be read about in the book Prairie Wings. https://djcarter.ca/books/prairie-wings

In 1941, German U-boat U-99 was captured south east of Iceland. Forty crew were rescued to become POW's. Midshipman Koenig was sent to a POW camp in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_submarine_U-99_(1940) This and many other stories are found in the book "POW: Behind Canadian Barbed Wire" by historian and author David J. Carter. "POW" tells the stories of the camps of both wars together with the escape attempts, murders, trials and executions.... In addition, coverage is given the POW camps in Britain and the USA together with the murders and executions which took place in those countries. This book was previously published in 1980 as "Behind Canadian Barbed Wire". Website: https://djcarter.ca Buy Now: https://djcarter.ca/books/pow-behind-canadian-barbed-wire More books by David J.
