SEALANTS Our molars, or back teeth, have deep pits and fissures on the biting surfaces. If very deep, and not properly cleaned, food can remain and cavities can begin. Sealants are like a raincoat for our teeth. They are a thin plastic coating that is applied to the chewing surface This painless procedure helps protect those teeth from decay-causing bacteria.... HOW ARE SEALANTS APPLIED Debris is first removed from the surface that the sealant will be applied. A conditioning solution is applied to prepare the tooth for the sealant. Sealant material is then applied to the deep pits and fissures and cured to the tooth to create an effective barrier from food and plaque. Each time you visit your dentist for your dental exam and professional cleaning, the sealants will also be checked. Sometimes, through wear and tear, sealants need to be redone. Talk to your dentist. Flossing and Brushing Brushing and flossing are important steps in preventing tooth decay and gum disease. Both brushing and flossing remove food and plaque from under the gums and from in between the teeth. HOW TO FLOSS Plaque is the main cause of gum disease. Plaque is an invisible bacterial film that develops on our teeth everyday. Plaque found between teeth can be removed with flossing.... STEP 1 - Take an arms length of floss from the container. STEP 2 - Wrap the floss around your middle finger of both hands. STEP 3 - Slide the floss between your teeth and wrap it into a ‘C’ shape using your index finger and thumb. Gently glide the floss up and down the tooth, making sure to get right down to the base. Make sure to floss both sides of every tooth. Roll up the used floss into a ball and put it in the garbage. Never flush floss down the toilet. Next comes brushing. Brushing after flossing is a more effective way to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. HOW TO BRUSH Remember to brush at least once during the day and always before going to bed. STEP 1 - Direct the toothbrush bristles towards the point where your teeth and gums meet. STEP 2 - Brush at a 45 degree angle to your teeth. STEP 3 - Using a gentle, circular motion, brush your teeth up and down. Don’t scrub. Clean every surface of your teeth: biting surface, cheek side, and tongue side. Don’t rush when you brush. Brushing should take 2 minutes. Use a soft or extra soft toothbrush. Choose a size and shape that allows you to reach all the way to your back teeth. https://davincismiles.ca/contact/

TMD SYMPTOMS When you have temporomandibular disorder, or TMD, it can be painful. TMD symptoms range from grinding and clenching your teeth, to jaw joint clicking, to sore or stiff jaw muscles. The pain can stop you from doing what you normally do. So now what?... TMD TREATMENT A hot or cold compress, placed on your jaw muscles, will help ease the soreness. Giving your jaw muscles a gentle massage will also help. Avoid hard, chewy, sticky, or crunchy foods. Cut your food into small pieces or choose a soft food diet. THE JAW BONE’S CONNECTED TO THE SKULL BONE ... The foot bone’s connected to the ankle bone. The ankle bone’s connected to the knee bone connected to the thigh bone connected to the hip bone connected to the back bone connected to the neck bone connected to the head bone. Some of you may remember this song. I learned it when I was young, probably learning about the bones that connect to each other to make up the body.... If we dig deeper, we know that the neck bone is connected to the jawbone which is connected to the skull bone. The point where bones connect in the body are joints. The TMJ is the point where the jawbone, or mandible, connects with the skull bone. TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. SYMPTOMS OF TMD When there is pain in the TMJ, clinicians will often say you have TMD, temporomandibular disorder. The symptoms of TMD can include: - Jaw pain - Facial pain - Sore or stiff jaw muscles - Headaches - Jaw joint clicking - Cracking - Grating - Locking - Limited jaw opening - Bite instability - Grinding or clenching of the teeth. Invisalign has become a popular choice of treatment to straighten a poor bite. Invisalign works by applying pressure to teeth, by wearing aligners. This pressure forces the teeth to move. The end result is a straight smile and teeth that are easy to keep clean! WHO CAN WEAR INVISALIGN Invisalign is most suited for teens and adults. Because Invisalign is easy to use and keep clean, it is an ideal treatment choice. Invisalign offers flexibility in treatment without visibility.... THE PROCESS OF INVISALIGN After an initial consultation, a photo-op is done! X-rays and photographs are taken of the mouth, teeth and face from every angle to create a detailed map of your mouth and the way it moves. Next, dental impressions are taken. This helps the dentist know if composite patches are needed for certain teeth to help the aligner ‘grip’ each tooth. When ready, you will try on your first aligner. The clear aligner will feel strange in your mouth. You may also experience slight speech differences. This is all normal. 1-2 weeks later, you will start wearing your next set of aligners. Generally you will have regular check-up visits throughout the entire Invisalign process. TREATMENT LENGTH Patients who choose Invisalign only have to wear trays for 9-15 months. Metal braces typically take 2 years. COST The end cost for Invisalign is similar to the cost of metal braces. OTHER QUESTIONS? Do you have more questions racing through your mind? WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS Both Invisalign and metal braces are designed to improve the alignment, or bite, of your teeth. That is, they both work to give you a straight smile and make flossing and brushing easy! Traditional braces have been used by dentists for decades. Invisalign is a relatively recent option. ... With braces, the fixed wire placed in the bracket is used to pull teeth into correct alignment. Invisalign uses a series of aligners that push teeth into correct alignment. CLEAR vs VISIBLE The term Invisalign simply refers to wearing aligners that are clear, or invisible. The aligners are made from see-through BPA-free plastic. Because the aligners are clear, no one knows you are receiving orthodontic treatment - unless you tell them. Traditional braces are made from metal. Square metal brackets are glued to your teeth. Metal wires are attached to the brackets with small elastic bands. All of this makes braces more visible. This can cause anxiety in some people. CONVENIENCE The Invisalign aligners can be removed whenever necessary. The aligners are usually removed when eating and for brushing and flossing. Generally the aligners should be worn for 20-22 hours per day. The constant pressure of the aligner is what will move the teeth. Traditional metal braces cannot be removed. They are stuck to your teeth. MORE QUESTIONS Talk to your dentist. We will work together to find the best solution for you. Call now! 780-456-3338 https://davincismiles.ca/contact/

WHAT IS INVISALIGN? Invisalign is becoming a popular option to straighten teeth. The term Invisalign simply refers to wearing aligners that are clear, or invisible. WHY WOULD I NEED TO STRAIGHTEN MY TEETH? Your bite is how your top and bottom teeth come together. When your teeth do not fit together well, it can cause some teeth to wear down more than others. Muscle tension and pain can result when we are older, after many years of having a bad bite. Crooked and crowded teeth ...are harder to clean and may cause cavities and gum disease. HOW DOES INVISALIGN WORK? The clear aligners are designed to apply the correct amount of pressure on teeth in the correct place(s) at the right phase of treatment. Constant pressure is applied when the aligners are worn all the time, except when eating. The aligners are replaced every 2 weeks during your treatment. The aligners are removable. There are no wires and brackets, like with traditional braces, so brushing and flossing is easy. ANY QUESTIONS? Dr. Sholina Kherani will tailor your Invisalign Treatment to your individual needs.
