So nice when a collector sends you a photo of your painting in its new home. Thank you Grace I'm glad you like it!

There are days when I truly appreciate how lucky I am. Yesterday was one of them! I was trying to layout my design of these rocks and I was getting really confused with my lines and was no longer seeing the planes of the shapes clearly. Rachel Is an amazing artist and was able to help me tremendously. She cut through the noise and simplified my drawing with 3 sharpie markers and a black and white print out of my inspiration photo in about a minute and a half. LOL seriously, maybe 2 sips of my hot coffee and she was done. "Mom - get rid of the details, just make clear, simple statements then let the rocks find themselves." God love her! Sharing studio space is so great. She has been finding these pools of colour in all of her paintings for about 3 years now and has this down to a science! Thanks kiddo you 'rocked' it. :-)

Georgia here! I had an interesting question about the painting I started yesterday and thought I'd share a little more info here on the Studio page instead of my personal page. A friend asked why I chose orange as my ground colour. Here is what I told her. :-) I'll be honest I'm pretty new to oils so this is a learning curve for me. Some of my artist friends who use oils begin by blocking in with acrylics first (because they dry so fast) then hitting it with oils, so I figu...red I'd give it another go. I honestly haven't decided yet if this will be an oil or acrylic. But, all that said I thought I'd set myself up for a nice bright, vibrant painting by using Perinone Orange PO43 as my ground. I rough sketched with Dioxazine Purple then blocked my brightest lights with Hansa Yellow and began my transition planes with a cooler/darker Quinacridone Violet. Here was my thinking: - it is easier to cool a colour than warm it so start warm, - it is easier to dull the intensity of a colour than increase the intensity of a colour so start it out screamin'. - it is easier to darken the value of a colour than lighten it so place my lights sooner than later. As for the Orange Ground I really thought about bright yellow but thought the orange might give me more options and yellow sits nicely on top of it anyway. The rocks I'm going to paint are Muskoka Granite and although at first glance are grey, have yellows, golds and pinks dancing throughout. I figured the orange would help support those tones. Just a quick post to show off Rachel Dawbon's winning painting and her landscape along with my campfire painting. They are both currently on display at the Alg...onquin Visitor's Centre at Algonquin Park. They are part of the annual ECOAA Mystery of the Park Show and will be on display with 70 other works of art until Nov. 1. If you are up that way drop in and see the show and maybe buy one to decorate your work from home space.
