STEP SEVEN: WHERE IS YOUR MONEY SPENT? Part ONE In STEP SIX I touched on historical elements that can be very stylish in today’s modern kitchens. There are some pics to show examples so I encourage you to hunt down that post and all the rest in this series too. The previous posts are all about the process of creating your perfect room. Now, it’s time to talk meat and potatoes, the budget. Where is it wise to spend it and where you can save. First let’s break down the basic f...actors that determine the cost of a kitchen: 1. The material of both the boxes and the door/drawer fronts. 2. The door style and finish. 3. The number of drawers versus doors. 4. Glass doors and finished interiors. 5. The complexity of the mouldings and panels. 6. The material of countertops. 7. The appliances and plumbing fixtures. All of the above elements have different levels of price points which can be mixed and matched to fit within your budget. For example plywood cabinet boxes with dove tailed drawers will be significantly more than our most popular white melamine interiors drawer boxes. Hint: the drawer slides are identical in both scenarios. A simple slab door is significantly less expensive than a raised panel mitred door. Painted slab doors in comparison to a maple stained door are almost the same cost. In that comparison, the material of the slab door is a lot less than maple but the finishing for painting is more involved so it balances out the cost. A three part intricate crown is yes you guessed it, three times more than a single shaker crown. Appliances and plumbing should not be forgotten when planning your budget. It’s quite common for homeowners to save their existing appliances IF they are in great shape, then they top up their funds, and purchase new at a later time. The big mistake I see is hanging onto the sink and faucet. I use the comparison that it’s like adding fuzzy dice from your Windstar to your new Lamborghini. They might look great in your Ford. . . Next week I will take a closer look at glass doors/finished interiors, countertops and the various materials with price points. I will also share a few hidden gems to help you make smart decisions on how to save your hard earned dollar without sacrificing the design and where you really need to spend to ensure your kitchen will be safe, functional, long lasting, and stylish. Until then, stay safe! [email protected]

My lovely wife @mandidarlene said I need to post more kitchens instead of random custom stuff so how about this beautiful dusty blue on maple with copper hardware and marble backsplash, absolutely love this combo it’s got modern appeal through solid colour, traditional shaker style cabinetry and an almost unintentional warmth to it. Plus some pretty trick storage features. Who wants one ?! #dawsoncabinetsltd #bluecabinets #coppersink #marble #dawsoncreek #cabinetry #shaker #shoplocal @ Dawson Cabinets LTD.

STEP SIX: HOW TO REVIVE HISTORICAL TRENDS With STEP FIVE, I discussed how to get the look you want and promised to visit a few trends from the past that can be revived if approached correctly. PHOTO #1: How many of you recognize this iconic kitchen? Hint: it was home to a very large family with a maid. I am using this example to dissect the elements in it and how those elements have returned with a very stylish modern twist. This is not about the function of the kitchen as ...this one clearly needs some adjusting to make it work safely. The elements in this room are; a gorgeous brick wall with wall ovens; two toned cabinetry with slab fronts; eye popping bright countertops with matching full height backsplash. PHOTO #2 This modern version shows a similar brick wall, slab walnut fronts with the island still home to the sink and cook top. The modern elements are toning down the accent colour to timeless black accents in the over sized pendants, countertops, and shelving niche. PHOTO #3 Now we are talking colour here! The orange is shifted to the cabinetry fronts with the colour leaning towards a yellow tone rather than echoing A&W’s iconic orange. The shape of the fronts are the same, however the addition to the aluminum trim, glass doors and linear handles brings it to 2020. PHOTO #4 I could not resist including this one! The soft cool blue cabinetry colour with the fresh white countertops is stunning . . . and the floor!!! While the pattern is from the retro age the colour is so new and fresh it makes for an outstanding room. The gold tones for the jewelry amp up the look to a whole new level. So that my friends, are a few examples of how to revive historical trends in a very stylish way. All of which we at Dawson Cabinets Ltd. can create for you. For next week’s topic I will look at where your money is spent in your kitchen and where we can creatively save without compromising the design. Until then, stay safe! [email protected]
