Athlete Feature First one of 2021 Full Name: Christopher Tran... Hometown: Richmond Hill Current Club: N/A Year started Dragon Boat: 2014 First year on National Team: 2019 Why you like being part of a Team Sport: Dragonboat has give me the opportunity to work with many different individuals to achieve a common goal. I always enjoy the social aspect that is vital to the team environment. This team sport has allowed me to build relationships that are unique to any I've had. You get to experience suffering with your teammates but it makes the good times all the sweeter. Your favorite song/playlist for training: Trash - Jeremy Newall How does sport make you a better person: Sport has taught me the importance of rest and pacing myself. I used to stress a lot about time-sensitive things like goals and deadlines, but similar to a race or time trial, I tend to burn out. Learning the importance of pacing myself has really helped me appreciate the slow and quiet, grinding parts of life. What is your favourite Dragon Boat race: Toronto islands 2016, 500m race. Honestly we didn't do that well. However, seeing our coach cry because he was proud of us was one of the most motivating things I've experienced in the sport. What one word best describes you: monkey What is your favourite quote: "be better." - Johnny Cheong

National team candidates had an amazing experience today....getting the chance to have a zoom call with one of Canada's strongest sprint canoe athletes Laurence Vincent Lapointe . Thank you Laurence! We had some great takeaways from the chat...such as "when you fear your race, look back on all the work you've done to get to that point" and "eat to train and sleep to train".
Athlete Feature Full Name: Valentin Iancu Hometown: Montreal... Current Club: 22Dragons Year started Dragon Boat: 2018 First year on National Team: 2019 Why you like being of a team sport: I love competing, and there is nothing better than competing amongst friends. Team sports also help me realize that you can’t always do everything alone, you need to be able to rely on others as well. Your favorite song/playlist for training: Above & Beyond - Red Rocks How does sport make you a better person: Sport has given me discipline and has taught me the importance of never giving up on dreams even when it seems impossible. It’s allowed me to put more trust into my team mates and allow myself to be confident in myself and others. Whats is your favorite Dragon Boat race: 2019 Pattaya WDC - 500m Mixed Race 3. After losing the first 2 races and being 1.5 sec behind Thailand for gold, the team poured everything they had in that race to win gold by 1.8sec What one word describes you best: Determined What is your proudest achievement: The 8 months of consistent hard training it took to make the 2019 national team. Making the team after less than a year after I first put my foot in a dragon boat was proof to me that hard work pays off. What is your favorite quote: You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough - Mae West #dbc #dragonboat #athlete
