CHECK YOUR TRAVEL COVERAGE [content source: Jennifer Neary, owner of Once In A Lifetime Travel] Most provincial healthcare plans provide some coverage for residents who temporarily leave the province, although there are healthcare services that some provincial plans don’t cover or only partially cover even within Canada, including hospital-related charges, clinic treatments, and ambulance services.... BEFORE YOU TRAVEL It’s important to check what medical insurance you have before you leave on a trip: There are certain maximum allowances, so you need to really review the terms and conditions of your insurance policies. Ensure you have adequate insurance to protect yourself against unexpected medical emergencies, especially when traveling to other countries. You could be required to pay upfront before any medical services are received. You could have no coverage at all. Depending on what you exactly need in destination, something as simple as a broken arm could cost you $40,000, or worst-case scenario, face the astronomical expense of having a body repatriated back to Canada. WHAT COVERAGE DO YOU ACTUALLY HAVE? There are different places where you may have access to some travel medical insurance. you may have coverage through your employer’s healthcare plans, you may purchase coverage from an insurance broker like DCIS who’s duty of care is to ensure you’re adequately covered for your specific health needs, time and destination. you may also have coverage on your credit card. CREDIT CARDS & TRAVEL INSURANCE If you have or you think you have a travel medical insurance through your credit card, it’s vital to carefully read the policy wording. Every credit card supplier is different. What was covered on one may not be covered on the other. You want to really look at who is covered: Is it just the person who the credit card is issued to? Are there any maximum amounts and deductibles? What about coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, such as prescriptions for high blood pressure? PRE-EXISITING MEDICAL CONDITIONS It’s also important to be aware of any pre-existing conditions that you have, and how those might affect your insurance. There are many different things that would be considered a pre-existing condition. You may expect, for example, that if you’re pregnant and something happens on your trip, you’re covered but that would be considered a pre-existing condition, and depending on your provider, your insurance likely wouldn’t cover it. * * * * * * Since travel is often an expensive venture, before you head out on that road trip, ocean voyage, US visit, or tour overseas, let the licensed professionals at DCIS provide that duty of care to ensure you and your family have that peace of mind.
