I've owned a small business, and this is absolutely true.

Now that things are settling down a little, I thought I'd take the time to address a few things about our appearance in The Dragon's Den. 1) We have only approached Home Hardware with our lock and that was two years ago. When we went in to see them, we only had the nickel plated prototype with the hollow metal bar. Joel and his staff were great and had some wonderful ideas (some we've incorporated), but I think we soured them coming in too early (no final product and no pack...aging). We learned our lesson and have waited for the final packaging to be made before approaching any more retailers (the packaging arrived last Friday and my team is working on the backboard to match it). We have put the lock in every retailers online portals but that has little chance of getting into the right hands (3 replied to us after months to say they already carry our product). 2) We ordered 6000 locks to get the price point we wanted as well as to make sure that the suppliers we had chosen could make them on time and without defects (it's a good thing we did as there was problems with the spring ball not working properly on over 300 of them). As everyone knows you only get one chance to make a first impression on a retailer and if we couldn't provide the lock on time or they were getting a lot of complaints about defects, they will drop us like a hot potato. I thought that having 300 sold in 30 days with both of us having full time jobs was pretty good. 3) I understand that we were there way too early to even expect a deal. Since we started to develop the lock, we've auditioned every year (we've taken our time designing the lock and getting our patent which was also just approved) not expecting to get asked to be on the show, but to get the great networking that occurs at the auditions in Toronto. If they call you to come on the show you don't say no. Where else will you get that kind of exposure for free. We have received a lot of great e-mails from customers since our airing and I thought I'd share one that we really liked. Here it is: Saw you on the den. They are in a different economic status and cannot begin to understand the feeling of knowing that people out there have access to your property and your product gives you peace of mind when you are home and don't want anyone to invade your privacy. May I suggest two other ideas that you could pursue? When my father-in-law h...ad Alzheimer's, he left their home several times in the middle of the night and we were lucky to have him returned to us. This would have prevented that. Also, there have been children who have done the same thing, with very tragic results. What about getting in touch with support groups for dementia and people that sell baby furniture and supplies. The other thing is there are a tremendous amounts of us who spend our winters in condos in Florida. I will be buying one for our Florida condo and for my condo town home in Thornhill. I think it's genius. You should contact Ace Hardware down there. For those of us who winter in the South, I know every resident I know down there would buy this. It is very clever and innovative. Those Dragons took my breath away with their ignorance of your product's usefulness. Had a great question from a potential customer. They wanted to know if it will work on their steel door. The answer is yes. All steel doors are only wrapped in 18 ga. (which is 0.05 inches) and are either foam or wood on the inside. If you do not own a drill to make the 2 small holes in your door a hammer and a nail will puncture the steel allowing you to screw the channel onto the door.
