De Beers Group is proud to announce that 213 computers are being distributed to nine schools in six Northwest Territories (NWT) communities as part of the company’s ongoing response to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, eight iPad mini tablets are being provided to the Deninu Kué First Nation in Fort Resolution to help elders in the community remain connected to families and friends while they are isolated at home. These additional computers will help even more students be able to access online courses and continue remote learning as the pandemic continues into 2021. The additional computers are being provided to schools in the following communities and schools: Yellowknife: École Sir John Franklin High School, Yellowknife Education District #1 Route 51 Learning Institute, École St. Patrick High School, and École Allain St-Cyr Behchoko: Chief Jimmy Bruneau School Whati: Mezi Community School Gameti: Jean Wetrade School Lutsel K’e: Lutsel K’e Dene School Ndilo: Kalemi Dene School Todd Stewart, Principal of École St. Patrick High School in Yellowknife: "Thank you to De Beers for continuing to support our students through the donation of 40 computers. They will be used to support students who may not otherwise have access and to further eliminate any barriers that may impede students’ success in school. Additionally, they are so important during this pandemic, as we are asked to limit the distribution of paper. The Chromebook laptop computers and tablets were purchased thanks to a $100,000 contribution from the Anglo American Community Fund. The donation is in addition to 117 computers provided to seven Indigenous community schools in the NWT in August 2020. De Beers Group’s community response program has provided an estimated $275,000 worth of computers, personal protective equipment, cleaning supplies, and food hampers in the NWT since March 2020. Gahcho Kué Mine is located 280 km northeast of Yellowknife in Canada’s Northwest Territories. The mine is a joint venture between De Beers Group (51% - the operator) and Mountain Province Diamonds (49%).

DE BEERS GROUP AWARDS 14 STEM SCHOLARSHIPS TO CANADIAN WOMEN De Beers Group is pleased to award scholarships to the value of US$48,825 to 14 Canadian women enrolled in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields at universities and colleges in Canada. The scholarships are awarded as part of De Beers Group’s partnership with UN Women and the company’s commitment to stand with women and girls in its host countries. Of the recipients, 11 are from the Northwest... Territories, two are from Northern Ontario and one is from Nunavut. Seven US$2,175 entrance scholarships will go to new recipients for the 2020-2021 school year, while seven women will receive a second year of funding under the 2019-2020 program. These awards are administered by Scholarships Canada, which received more than 200 applications this year for the De Beers Group program. As a global leader for inclusion and diversity, it is critical that De Beers Group supports women who want to enter fields that have been traditionally dominated by men, said Mpumi Zikalala, Managing Director of De Beers Group Managed Operations, which oversees De Beers’ operations in Canada. We are especially proud that all of these scholarships are supporting women from our host communities. The scholarship recipients are enrolled in a wide variety of fields of study, including neuroscience, Bachelor of Science programs, chemical engineering, and engineering. Since launching in 2018, a total of 45 scholarships have been awarded to Canadian women through the De Beers Group/UN Women partnership, including 22 scholarships at the University of Waterloo and University of Calgary. For the 2020-2021 school year, four scholarships will be awarded at Waterloo and six at Calgary through the De Beers Group program. As a Global HeForShe Thematic Champion for UN Women, De Beers Group provided US$3 million to support a variety of programs for women and girls in its producer countries, including US$600,000 to support education for women and girls in Canada. Safety signs displaying Covid-19 information are going up in school playgrounds in 10 communities thanks to a partnership between #DeBeersGroup and the GNWT’s Department of Executive and Indigenous Affairs. 53 large signs reminding children and families about proper hygiene, physical distancing, and staying home when sick will be installed at entrances to school playgrounds at Yellowknife Education District No. 1, Lutsel K’e, Fort Resolution, Fort Smith, K’atl’odeche First N...ation, Hay River, and four Tlicho communities. The #safety signs display the information in multiple languages, including English, French, Tlicho, Chipewyan, Cree, and South Slavey. De Beers provided almost $7,000 to cover the cost of translation, printing, and distribution to the communities. Gahcho Kué Mine, a joint venture between De Beers Group and Mountain Province Diamonds, was pleased to partner with a number of its business partners to help Avens achieve its Operation Care on Wheels fundraising goal. Thanks to a $51,500 contribution presented on Thursday (Oct. 15), Avens met its $125,000 campaign target to purchase a new bus that will be used to take residents of the long term care facility on outings, to appointments and more. Almost 120 new laptops donated by De Beers Group are on their way to schools in seven Indigenous NWT communities to improve student access to education. In addition, 10 refurbished surplus laptops will be donated to the Yellowknife Public Library to enable individuals, including homeless and marginalized people who do not have access to the Internet, to communicate with loved ones. Lyndon Clark, General Manager of Gahcho Kué Mine, said, Education is one of our key focus area...s and we are pleased to be able to meet an immediate and practical need as students are preparing to go back to school. Education is important and we want to ensure that students have the tools they need for online courses. Thanks to Roy's Audio Video Unlimited, Yellowknife, NT for securing the best rate so we could purchase as many laptops as possible. The schools receiving the laptops are in Whatì, Gamètì, Wekweètì, Behchok, utselke, Fort Resolution, and K'atodeeche First Nation Reserve in Hay River. These donations are part of De Beers’ $176,000 community response to assist NWT communities dealing with the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
