It is nice to share a story that has a good outcome. (Please turn on the sound.) However, the issue comes up again.... the amount of dangerous garbage left behi...nd by the O&G, forestry and cattle industries in our back country needs to be dealt with. I have spent hours this week with my wire cutters, cutting out horses and taking down decrepit fences that have not seen use in 50+ years. This is the easy part. The larger and equally dangerous left-behinds of industry kill and maim hundreds of animals every year. No one is going to take responsibility for it, so we must rally to look after this issue - for the sake of all wildlife! I sincerely hope that our wild horse organizations can pull something together to remedy this soon, before another harmful and expensive rescue - or worse - happens again. I will be first in line to volunteer. A note about the naming of wild horses: this is done to record and remember individuals and make it easier to share information than just giving them a number. I most often use June Fox's database names for the sake of consistency, though some of you may have different names for them. That's okay too!

"On Stafne Ridge" What is their story? Each herd I come across is so unique and often there are more questions than answers when it comes to their family history. The chances of a wild mare conceiving twins is about 1 in 10,000. The chances of them both surviving is astronomical. So with this chestnut mare and her two roan foals, the question remains... are they both hers or did she acquire the second foal through a strange set of circumstances? It sounds like a lead-in to st...arting a short story... perhaps one day it will become part of "The Mustang Diaries" which is a long term project I have for a collection of creative non-fiction wild horse stories. As we wind down the year I am reminded of all of the amazing opportunities and experiences I had this year with our Alberta Wild Horses. Travel restrictions kept me from my international trips, but the upside was getting to take shots like this one just 2 hours from home. This stallion is IMO the most beautiful example of a young stallion in his prime. He has a large band of mares, all stolen from his father. His father now has only the two chestnut mares and foal in "Septem...ber". In this photo, he is seen in the process of chasing one of his mares back to the herd. Well, check out this little surprise we found today! Istas has had a baby. He is a strong little colt no more than 3-4 days old. If the average gestation period for a mare is 320 days... that means she was bred around the end of January. Most likely she would have aborted a fetus in January (last winter was so tough), and then came into season and was naturally bred by her stallion right away. Let's hope the next few weeks is mild enough to give this colt a fighting chance. ...Looks like he will be a grey as well. Had a little fun recently getting the full moon to line up with a wild horse! What are the chances? Glad I spent the money to put a platform rack on top of my Toyota FJ so I could stand on top and get just the right angle minutes before the moon dipped below the mountain. I was so happy to find Carletta's band this week. They have been back in the hills since early summer but they seem to be back down by the river and I am hopeful that we will have more encounters like this one once winter is in full swing. I have spent over 90 days in the field so far this year with Alberta's wild horses. Despite the number of hours and days out looking for horses it never dampens my sheer joy and excitement when I come across one of my favourite herds. This was my first glimpse of Blueberry since the spring. All of the mares in this herd lost their foals this year. Blueberry was the last one to lose hers and once he was gone the herd migrated off the beaten path. What happened to the foals? T...his is what my research is about. Do you love bears? Kermode (Spirit) Bear, Great Bear Rainforest, BC. What a special bear this was, caring for her two black cubs who she had told to wait for her up a nearby tree. The month of March in the 2021 Calendar: One of my favorite moments from this year was capturing Bill's herd at the top of Bull Hill on a snowy day. This image entitled "Soon" shows the elder mare Bertha scratching her very large tummy. She gave birth to a healthy foal a few weeks later, but sadly it disappeared, as did all of the foals from this herd. From 5 mares we saw 4 foals in early spring and none made it past June. This is just one of the events that prompted my study... of foal survivorship in our Alberta Wild Horses. This is my awesome wildie #3 "Cody" 14hh pinto. He was rescued by Wild Horses of Alberta Society. I adopted him 3 years ago and put lots of groundwork on him, but never got around to riding him. Finally, last month, I sent him over to Andrea Harris to be backed for the first time by her assistant Alex. They did a super job starting him and I went for my first ride on him last week. Here is a new foal born to the elder mare Farah and stallion Rizzo. We are calling her September (Ember for short). This is a tough one. It is with the saddest of hearts that I bring you news of dear little Robin's passing. Just a few days ago my workshop group had the privilege of standing with his herd as they gathered around us. This is the last photo I took of him. Robin was healthy and strong, giving us hope for his survival this winter. However, it was not meant to be. Recently, I observed Banner and his herd galloping down the road, obviously spooked. Robin was not among them and hi...s absence over the following days confirmed that he has died - most likely from predators - the same fate as so many of his young kin this year. RIP sweet boy, you brought us much joy in your short little life. 8 years ago I adopted Preacher and Flyer (below). They were part of a government-sanctioned and clandestine cull of over 220 horses from the Alberta backcountry. Most of those horses went for slaughter, but a few foals, including these guys, were spared. Fortunately, we now have two amazing groups (WHOAS & HAWS) and many individuals that lobby for the wild horses' protection - and with the power of social media, such unnecessary and politically motivated (rather than science-...based) culls will be much more difficult to orchestrate. I was very excited this week to finally meet Ghost Walker! With his unusual colour will he grow up to be an iconic figure? Will he even make it through the winter? Time will tell. I recently got back from an amazing holiday on Vancouver Island. We took the long way home through Osoyoos and located some of the Osoyoos Indian Band's wild horses near Oliver, BC! I had often herd of these horses and was skeptical of their existence, but with help from the visitor center, we were able to find a small band on their way to a water hole. It was 30 degrees in the desert and this young filly with her bald face and blue eyes was a wee bit sunburned, but she was a... real beauty with her unusual markings and lop ears. As the only visitor on the island, I was able to immerse myself in the landscape and enjoy the utter solitude that only Sable Island can provide. Getting to Sable is never easy, but winter poses many more obstacles. After 6 weeks of delays the weather/ocean conditions aligned to allow me access. It is an experience I will remember forever.
