We want to take a moment to say a heartfelt THANK YOU everyone in Thunder Bay that voted us into the #1 spot on these categories in the Walleye survey We are ...incredibly proud of our staff (almost 20 ppl now) and our local partners DeBruin's Greenhouses for all the hard work they do on a daily basis. Producing products locally is a labour of love and it’s far from easy, but I think any such company would attest: Making a local product in Thunder Bay is an honour and the support this community gives businesses like ours is just incomparable! Thanks all!!

Every year Renal volunteers hold an event that Hospital staff really look forward to the Renal Bake Sale! The bake sale fundraises for the Renal Patient Fund, ...which provides annual Christmas Hampers for dialysis patients at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and the Hemodialysis Unit at Meno-Ya-Win Hospital in Sioux Lookout. This year the Bake Sale couldn’t go ahead, so for a short time it looked like patients would be going without their annual Christmas hampers. The Renal volunteers & staff wouldn’t let that happen. First, volunteers themselves began donating money in lieu of holding the bake sale. Then Renal staff did the same! Then it grew even larger. When I learned we wouldn’t be able to do the hampers this year I reached out to my fellow farmers says Henri DeBruin, who works in the Renal Department, as well as working at DeBruin’s Greenhouses and sitting on a number of Agriculture boards. I contacted the Beef Farmers of Thunder Bay, who passed the word on to the Dairy Farmers of Thunder Bay and soon we had donations coming in from all around the city. Holly Freill, Registered Dietitian with the Renal Program, is proud to see how far the food hampers have come. We started the hampers in 2014, and would fill them with as much as we could depending on how much was raised. she says, What makes this year’s hamper extra special is that it’s filled with locally sourced food. We’ve never been able to offer that before, and we’ve heard from patients that it’s the best food hamper they’ve ever received. Included in the Christmas hampers were 3 recipes that could be made using every item so each ingredient could be enjoyed. I’m also so impressed with how well the Hospital works together for a cause. Holly continues, This all came together very quickly and we’d go to Shipping & Receiving and tell them we’re expecting a shipment of food, or to Nutrition & Food Services and ask if they have room in their freezer, and they’d do everything they could to help. Delores Merkley, who also works in the Renal Department, says when her aunt heard of the cause she wanted to donate too. My aunt was selling masks and hats that she’d made herself, and a lot of our staff ended up buying some from her. Her aunt, Lorraine Stevenson, donated $1,000 from hat and mask sales to help fund the Christmas hampers. The volunteer & staff donations, plus the items donated from local farmers, totaled $7,000 in goods that will be given to 200 dialysis patients in Thunder Bay and Sioux Lookout. Thank you to everyone who helped make these Christmas hampers possible! LETTUCE has been added to Superior Seasons Farmers' Market! Some of you have been asking why there was not lettuce on the site. The easy answer would be due to decreased sunlight and a change in the nutrient levels in the water of the hydroponic system. ... The one was out of our control. We have joked give us sun and we will give you lettuce, cucumbers and ripe tomatoes! The other was caused by a trial in the nutrient levels in the water. Since our lettuce is grown hydroponically it grows quickly. We general have lettuce and basil ready to sell in 6 weeks (from seed to harvest) This is during the sunny summer weather, but since the weather has changed and added to that the lack of a certain nutrient in the water the lettuce took longer to mature. It will still have the same great taste but it just takes a little longer as the days get longer. So now that the sun is once again shining and the nutrient levels are back to where they are suppose to be we will once again have our normal 480 head of lettuce per week! But alas...one thing this slow down of growth in one week of crops has caused, is that two weeks are now maturing at the same rate. So from limited amounts of lettuce to 2 crops in one week.
