"DOPPLER EFFECT is a change in frequency and wavelength of a wave. It is caused by the change in distance between the thing creating the wave (causer) and whatever is measuring (watcher or observer), seeing or hearing the wave. A common example is sitting in a car while another car goes by the watcher. The watcher will hear a change in pitch, while the sender will not." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbIcC1I6pZg

Ever wonder how other species hear? SNAKES: although they do not have any visible ears, they hear through their lower jaw which is connected to an inner ear. When a snakes head rest on the ground they are able to sense vibrating waves, which helps them hear and catch prey. FISHES: again, no traditional ears but they are able to hear pressure changes through the ridges of their bodies.... MOSQUITOES: males hear with thousands of tiny hairs that grow on their antennae.

David Phan, Civil Engineer Student, wrote: "Question. How do you tell if you have bad hearing or not if you've grown up with it all your life and have never experienced "quality" hearing? I wouldn't say it relates to me, but what if I have had bad hearing since the beginning of time and I just don't know it? is there a way to test this?" -----------------------------------------... Hi David, Thanks for your question! Normally when babies are born they are given a test called Oto-acoustic Emissions test (among other tests). This involves presenting two tones (separated by a specific ratio) in the ear that SHOULD result in a third tone being produced back by the ear. This tells the health practitioner(s) that the baby’s ear is working normally. Since babies can’t tell you themselves-objective tests are very important and useful! Another way for doctors to determine if a child is not hearing properly is if they are not communicating (this could be babbling, making noises, responding etc.). They can’t mimic what they can’t hear! There are several of other hearing tests that the child can go through to determine if a hearing loss or pathology is there. Those who grew up with a hearing loss (usually because of genetics) without hearing technology typically enunciate differently as well. Most people who have hearing loss without treatment have their other senses heightened and rely on lip reading and peoples body gestures. In the past, there were those who were consider deaf and dumb when really they were probably just hard of hearing. Some of whom endured different malpractices such as electro-therapy or were placed in an asylum. We are very fortunate in today’s society to have all different types of technology to determine if a person has hearing loss. I hoped this satisfied your curiosity. Let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks, Dee Thach
