The latest review from our teen volunteer! Wildwood by Colin Meloy Wildwood is a 541-page novel about a 12-year-old girl Prue McKeel and her classmate Curtis Mehlberg who go into the woods to look for Prue’s baby brother Mac (who was abducted by a murder of crows, very spooky), but soon realize that there’s a whole other world on the other side of the train tracks into the forest, and that rescuing Mac will be a lot harder than they thought. ... I read this book about a year ago but I really wanted to review it because of how much I liked it. It’s pretty long and drawn-out but definitely had its exciting moments. I really like fantasy, especially very nature-y (nature-dependent? natural fantasy? I have no idea) genres of it, and this book is jam-packed with it. Barely anything takes place indoors. And when it does there are usually animals involved. I love it. It has a folklore feel to it and includes some really fun scenes and worldbuilding, including (but not limited to): flying on the back of a bird, secluded mystics with a giant tree, owls wearing glasses, people riding into battle on bicycles, coyotes with swords, evil ex-queens (technically governors, but same difference) and of course, talking animals. This book is pretty light for the most part, but it does have some violence and darker themes surrounding war and politics. The main antagonist Alexandra, is a pretty interesting character with flair and a cool (if not horribly tragic and depressing) backstory and even though her goal to destroy basically the entire forest as revenge seems a little unrealistic, she makes a very fine villain. There isn’t really anything I didn’t like outright, but Wildwood is definitely long and drags out in places, and some people might not like the constant switching between Prue’s and Curtis’ points of view. Things I liked about this book: -Lots of nature! -A cool villain -Really pretty cover art -see also: my list of some cool scenes in the second paragraph Things I didn’t like about this book: -Some scenes are kinda drawn out -A lot of parts aren’t that exciting I’d give this book 5 stars. Right now there aren’t any movie or show adaptations. Wildwood was on the New York Times Bestselling list for two weeks in 2011 and won the E.B White Read Aloud Award in 2012.
