The government announced yesterday that short-term rentals will be allowed to open today, June 5th. That is good news. It comes after weeks of confusion created... mostly by the wording of the emergency orders and their interpretation by various stakeholders. The Emergency Business Line was particularly unhelpful since the advice offered was simply to reread the confusing regulations. I sincerely hope that the future is less murky. Businesses are allowed to open provided that they can open safely. Businesses can open, but they do not have to, and sadly many wont. While this is welcome news, it is not time for a happy dance. Speaking to camp operators, for some their season was over in March when the phone stopped ringing for cancelations. Each business is unique. Some operators have campgrounds with mostly local and seasonal rentals, they are going to be ok, not great, but ok. On the other end of the spectrum are the lodges who cater to the American market. They are in major trouble. Opening on June 5th, without reservations because your clients cannot cross the border is not even an option. Tourism is a major driver in northern Ontario, it is one of those things that you do not notice until it is gone. Every operator that I have spoken to wants people to be safe, and they want to still be here next year to welcome back people to the North. For many, it will mean changing their marketing strategy and interim funding to help them through this disaster. We need to work together to make that happen. FOR SALE yes the rumours are true, Deepwater Lodge is for sale. Life is calling us elsewhere and we will eventually be saying goodbye to our little piece of heaven. Until we are sold, its still business as usual, and we still have some openings available for this summer.

MNR fire has notified me that they are putting Temagami on Evacuation Alert. People should be prepared to leave if notified of an evacuation. If people want to leave on their own they need to go North as per MNR direction The emergency community group is being activated and meeting shortly Thanks Jim
