The Front Desk By Kunta Kinte Many years ago, I did a study of routine frontline services in commercial banks. Their priority, I discovered, was the diligent preservation of the implicit trust reposed in them by clients. Therefore, they worked extremely hard to avert conversion. Unfortunately, many a time, clients were visibly unimpressed. This often degenerated to such wrongful accusations as lengthy turnaround times or lack of client empathy....Continue reading

Hospitality's Unsung Heroes By Kunta Kinte Anyone who has ever lodged in a hotel will likely admit the best part of the experience is entering the warmth and comfort of their room. Without a doubt, the exterior, lobby, lounge, and pool among others of some hotels are worth celebrating too. However, the guest room remains outstanding as nowhere else compares to it. It is a fortress of sorts. The guest’s sanctuary, if you like. That cozy feeling inside is the hard work and dedi...cation of the housekeeper. Guests could stay from overnight to one month and not meet any of them. Mostly, when they go out, the room is a mess. Yet, when they return, it is back to a pristine state. Though aware of the amazing change, they hardly ever acknowledge who did the incredible job. The housekeepers are often neither seen nor heard. They work exceedingly hard to keep occupancy at its competitive best. It is labour intensive, and therefore, extremely hard on the body. From shift-start, they begin the duty of cleaning an assigned number of rooms. No matter how unkempt these rooms may be, they must be tidy in record time. It is common knowledge that the messier a room, the more difficult it is to handle, and in effect, the more time required. Yet, they do not receive any extra time because no hotel can afford to keep a guest waiting. Pundits easily argue that not all guests leave their rooms untidy. In which case, things eventually balance out. Still, it takes nothing away from the altruism which the housekeeper exudes while providing that exceptional experience. We may have seen some footage on the internet where some members of the housekeeping staff of some hotels did untoward things. Among others, there was this clip where the housekeeper used the guest’s toothbrush to scrub the toilet bowl. Despicable! On another, spittle was used to wipe the drinking glasses. Abhorrent! There is no excuse, and every reprehensible act stands condemned as its perpetrator. Better conditions of service and a proper orientation will avert such incivility. More heartwarming is, their noble acts far exceed the unholy ones of the deviants. Other employees who have the good fortune of being more visible to guests, enjoy such perks as tips, commendations, and acknowledgments. I wish we would remember the housekeeper too, even when not physically present. So, the next time you stay in a hotel; as you tip the valet for helping with your vehicle and luggage, the bartender for the excellent cocktail, and the server for the exquisite dish, kindly remember our unsung heroes of hospitality. They are the ones who make it possible for the hotel to offer an ambience we never forget. Keep a little something in appreciation of their diligent service. Chief among them are the housekeepers. You’re welcome!

The opposite of war is not peace but equal rights and justice. In like manner, the opposite of poverty is not wealth. It is also justice. More than 3billion people live in poverty all around the world. In this new year, 2021, they will be watching, waiting, and asking. What shall we make them see? What shall they expect from us? What answers shall we provide for them? The opposite of love is not hate, but indifference. We can act. We can also do nothing. The choice is ours. However, I will implore that we all do something. Something positive, at least, within our different spheres of influence. It’s day 5 already. Are we ready? Happy New Year, Everybody!
