Ah, finally something that's starting to look like furniture! Just needs some legs and finishing. I think these hairpin legs add a great modern twist to these very rustic Box Tables.
After laminating the two boards together, and cutting the pieces, the next step was to glue the boxes together. These had to be clamped in all directions at once - there are never enough clamps in the world!
Same pieces of lumber - but looking a little better after a good sanding. Both of these boards had cracks running along them, that had to be glued back together before the boards could be cut for the Box Tables.
I have an order (from my daughter) for a a pair or Box Tables that will stand together as a coffee table, or can be separated and used individually. Each table will be 18" square and 16" high. Once again - some pretty ragged looking lumber to start out with!
The best part of this process for me is when I get to oil the finished product. The addition of Tung Oil is like breathing life back into the dry dead cells of the wood and bringing it back to life. I takes several coats of oil with fine sanding in between to develop its final finish. Tung oil provides a low lustre resilient surface that's easy to live with and maintain.... The legs look rough, but all of that unevenness is smooth to the touch. I've also included photos of the matching table. My furniture isn't for everyone. It's extreme rusticity does not appeal to all, but I see it's strength, resilience and character - and the beauty of the wood grain, that could only be created by nature.
