As many of you know, Prime Minister Trudeau announced Canada's Economic Response Plan for the COVID-19 pandemic today. There are many measures being put in place to help Canadians. As things are changing rapidly information is constantly being updated. For this tax season this is what you need to know: 1. The deadline for individual tax returns has been pushed to June 1, 2020. 2. Any tax balances due today through September 2020 can be deferred until August 31, 2020. This in...cludes installment payments. No interest will be accrued during this time. Businesses are being offered the same relief. 3. T183 forms can now be signed electronically, reducing the need for a printer or a visit to your accountant. Outside of tax implications these are some highlights that will be relevant for many of our clients. The government is proposing to: 1. Increase the maximum annual Canada Child Benefit (CCB) payment amounts, only for the 2019-20 benefit year, by $300 per child. 2. Double the GST tax credit, only for the 2019-20 benefit year 3. Reducing minimum RRIF withdrawals by 25% for 2020 With respect to immediate impact to income as a direct or indirect result of the COVID-19 outbreak the goverment has: 1. Waived the one week waiting period for Employment Insurance (EI) 2. Waived the requirement for medical certification to the eligible to EI sick leave 3. Introduced the Emergency Care Benefit providing up to $900 bi-weekly, for up to 15 weeks to assist self-employed individuals that are sick, caring for a sick family member or forced to stay home due to school closures Many of these measures, are not immediately active as the government works towards implementation but will be available in April in the case of the EI and Emergency Care Benefits or May for the changes to GST and CCB. If you have questions please reach out and we will do our best to answer them. We are available remotely and will continue working on our clients returns. Stay safe everyone. Take care.
