~Remembrance Day History Lesson~ This is a bronze memorial plaque that was sent out with a parchment scroll to the next of kin of all British and Empire service personnel who lost their lives during active service in World War I. They became known as the Dead Man’s Penny. After a public competition with over 800 designs, the competition was won by sculptor and medalist Edward Carter Preston using the pseudonym Pyramis.... The design includes an image of Britannia standing with a lion holding a trident. In her outstretched left hand Britannia holds an olive wreath above the ansate tablet bearing the deceased's name cast in raised letters. An oak spray with acorns can be found to the right of the lion. The name does not include the rank since there was to be no distinction between sacrifices made by different individuals. Two dolphins swim around Britannia, symbolizing Britain's sea power, and at the bottom a second lion is tearing apart the German eagle. The inscription round the circumference reads HE (or SHE) DIED FOR FREEDOM AND HONOUR. This framed memorial plaque honours the sacrifices made by Arthur Jordan.
