Todays "Because We Care" segment comes from our very own team! "This picture was taken just before the world went into lockdown at a long-term care home in Mississauga. I was working with the team to make their Dementia Care home area look a little bit more like home. Today marks 5 years since I joined the DementiAbility team, and this is the part of my job I miss the most. Being in the homes, connecting with the staff, and making the lives of those living with dementia just... a little bit brighter. I am so grateful I have found a job I am so passionate about. Even though it feels like the world will never go back to normal, I have hope. Teaching the workshop online and working with the front line workers who are so exhausted - yet show up to learn how to make the lives of those living with dementia even better - has continued to give me my why when I am missing my friends and family and just want some normalcy. For now, I will continue changing the lives of those living with dementia from my home office behind a screen. Here’s to 5 years working with my hero (my mom), in a job that makes me proud every day (and lets me put on our website that I’m the office comedian), with hopes I can one day go back in the homes and do the part of my job I love most." - Laura Elliot, Gerontologist and Dementia Care Educator, DementiAbility Enterprises See more

We are pleased to bring you another "Because We Care" Segment! Sharon Hoosein is a Seniors Services/Geriatric Medicine Nurse Practitioner with Trillium Health Partners. After attending the DementiAbility Workshop and with support from her colleague Zainab Rizvi, OT, Sharon was able to create a wonderful new intervention for individuals with dementia who come into the Emergency Department. "Great ideas were presented at the last workshop including using stuffed animals an...d dolls to soothe anxious, agitated ED (Emergency Department) dementia patients.... this one below I made out of a towel and it’s iPac (Infection Prevention and Control) friendly as it all goes in the wash- instructions found on YouTube!" Thank you Sharon and Zainab for your creativity and innovation! It is so wonderful seeing DementiAbility put into practice in all healthcare settings. Check out this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeAUduJMMD8 for detailed instructions for creating a towel-buddy! See more

Tomorrow is Bell Lets Talk Day. Now more than ever we need to create ongoing conversations about the importance of good mental health and breaking stigmas around seeking help. On Bell Let’s Talk Day, Bell donates 5 cents to Canadian mental health programs for every applicable text, local or long distance call, tweet or TikTok video using #BellLetsTalk, every Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, TikTok, Twitter and YouTube view of the Bell Let’s Talk Day video, and ever...y use of the Bell Let’s Talk Facebook frame or Snapchat filter. All at no cost to participants beyond what they would normally pay their service provider for online or phone access. Behavioural Support Ontario (BSO) wants to help YOU create moments of wellness in such difficult times. The BSO and DementiAbility would like to invite you to take the wellness challenge! How many of these wellness spots can you fill in before tomorrow? Whether you get four corners, one line, or a full card, let us know by using the hashtag #BSOMentalWellnessBingo on Twitter. - The bingos declared will be entered into a draw for gift cards, generously donated by a BSO advocate. - 2 x $25 gift cards will be drawn for those that let us know they have filled four corners or one line. 1 x $50 gift card will be drawn for indicating that they’ve filled their entire card. - Submission deadline is Friday (January 29th) end of day with prizes being drawn the following week. Good luck, be well and let's keep the conversation going until we have adequate support and services for all forms of mental and physical health!

A small group of students in the Recreation Therapy program at Niagara College, with the assistance of Professor Christine Wilkinson, decided to prepare a gift bag for every resident of two LTC homes to open on Christmas day. After receiving many donations from the community, the students were able to include not only personal care items, but several DementiAbility activities for the residents to enjoy and engage with. The gift bags were delivered to Millennium Trail Manor i...n Niagara Falls and Gilmore Lodge in Fort Erie on Thursday, December 17, 2020. Check out the whole story here: https://dementiability.com/niagara-college-knows-how-to-co/ DementiAbility would like to send a special shout out to Christine and the Niagara College students, Brittany Richards, Jessica De Freitas and Jelena Vicentic, for their kindness, care and compassion, and to all who donated to such a worthy cause!
