Fall is the perfect time to lay sod as cooler temperatures and increased precipitation makes for ideal sod takeoff! So how can you ensure that you have success with sod? 1) Select your sod from a preferably local company (if you get it from a garden center - ask where it came from and how long ago it was cut). The fresher the cut sod, the higher chance of growing success - 24 hours between it being cut and laid is an ideal time. 2) Fertilize! You can fertilize two different w...ays with sod - either underneath, raked into the top soil prior to laying the sod down, or on top of the sod about 4-6 weeks after it has been laid. 3) H2O! Lots of water is critical to ensure the grass roots take off. Sod dries out quickly, so daily deep waterings are essential - ideally 3-4" of soil beneath the surface should be wet. Your sod should root around 10-15 days, after which you can do your first cut - but make sure your mower is set to the highest setting to avoid cutting close to the root. Also try to avoid walking, running or having pets on freshly laid sod as this can prevent the fragile young roots from developing properly. Have any other sod questions? Let us know!
