The Ontario Court of Appeal has ruled that the Toronto City Councillor Jim Karygiannis has automatically forfeited his election to city council as he filed an election financing report that showed he had exceeded the spending limits on "expressions of appreciation". The expense limit for expressions of appreciation in the 2018 municipal election was $6,120.80. Mr. Karygiannis filed an election financing report showing that his campaign spent $47,259.86 on expressions of appreciation, including $27,083.50 for one dinner party that was held two months after the election.
