This shows the impacts of Beech Bark Disease, a fungus that is transmitted through a non-native scale insect that was introduced many years ago. The scale insects feed on beech tree sap, and while the wounds in the tree are open, the nectria fungus enters and colonizes the bark, and in the layers underneath where critical water and nutrients are transported through the tree. The fungus severely weakens the tree and can lead to eventual failure as can be seen in these photos. These pictures were taken in Chapman Mills wood in the south of Ottawa. #invasivespecies #BBD
