Our hearts go out to all the families & friends of the victims of this weekend's senseless tragedies. There are no words to describe what has happened. I heard a quote this morning on The Rock of the Atlantic Network: "In such a tight knit community like the Maritimes, everyone knows someone who knows someone who is either directly or indirectly impacted by this situation."

This outlines the EI benefits available. Workers and businesses hurt by the COVID-19 pandemic may be eligible for part of the $82 billion aid package announced Wednesday by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, which includes $27 billion in direct support for those struggling to find work or care for family members. The package, now before Parliament, stands to adjust the rules on who qualifies for employment insurance (EI), and includes two emergency benefits for those who don't. ...Continue reading

To our valued customers, we are well aware of the Covid-19 situation. We are not a storefront business, but do have customers stop by the office to drop off paperwork, especially during income tax season. Please be assured we take all precautions to keep the office clean and sanitary. I will be restricting onsite visits to those that are absolutely necessary, which means working from home as much as possible. For those customers needing to drop off income tax papers, we have a box on the outside wall near the office entrance, plus there are a number of electronic options available. Please do not hesitate to phone us with any concerns. None of our staff have traveled outside of Nova Scotia, but are also limiting exposure to the public as much as possible.

Just received a robotic call from Service Canada stating my SIN has been suspended due to suspicious activity on my part. Must have been when I crossed the border from West Hants into East Hants Wednesday.

I received two emails today that appeared to be from Canada Post advising that they had attempted to deliver a parcel to my house but no one was home. This was odd since I didn't order any parcels, and if I did, I generally use my personal email address. There was a link to click to check the details, and an attachment which was in Word. I checked with the lady working the Canada Post counter at Guardian Elmsdale and I was advised Canada Post only uses .pdf attachments. Bottom line: SCAM.

There was a message on our home phone yesterday from "CRA." It said that they would be filing a lawsuit to recover unpaid income taxes. I hope they phone back so I can listen to their spiel, threats and ways to "pay" then inform the caller that part of my business is filing income taxes and dealing with CRA. Anyone receiving such a call from "CRA" should immediately hang up and report the number to police. CRA will never demand payment in Bitcoin or similar currencies like... Gift Cards. Their normal process is to send notices of account overdue, and eventually follow up with a phone call. Depending on the circumstances, there are usually options for payment arrangements if the taxpayer cannot pay the balance in full. If a taxpayer is unsure as to whether they have a balance owing to CRA, either check your balance through My Account, via your tax preparer who may use Represent a Client, or phone CRA and speak with an agent. During my recovery period I will be working from home as my strength allows. My voice is quite raspy now so may not be able to take voice calls but certainly will respond to emails or text messages. Laura will be running the show for the next week.

As bookkeepers, we encourage customers to keep a vehicle log to record kms driven for business purposes vs personal. A recent HST filing that included the HST paid on the purchase of a new truck was flagged for review. Without the HST from the truck purchase, there would have been a small refund, but was made much larger by the inclusion. CRA's review requested the normal information. Ten largest purchase and sales invoices, plus a detailed listing of all sales and purcha...ses involving HST. As well, CRA requested a copy of the purchase invoice, loan contract, insurance policy and information on the old truck that was sold upon purchase of the new one. They also wanted a vehicle log or other proof of how the vehicle(s) are used for the business. Without a proper log, we sent a letter stating the vehicle was used to pick up parts, machines for repair and deliver back to owners. The owners have a car for personal use. However, CRA ruled that since the truck was new at the time of HST filing, and without a log for the previous truck, the HST paid on the purchase would not be allowed for one year and would be based on the percentages used to claim CCA on the 2019 income tax return. Try as I may, I could not convince the auditor to allow the claim, as the business has been using 100% of the value of the previous truck for CCA and expense purposes. See more

This picture illustrates our commitment to On-site service. The only access to the customer's home was through a one-lane detour using a revamped snowmobile/ATV trail with narrow temporary bridge.
