COVID-19 BRUXISM Recently COVID stress has caused us to grind our teeth to pieces. Teeth grinding and jaw clenching (also called bruxism) is often related to stress or anxiety. It does not always cause symptoms, but some people get facial pain and headaches. As well, it can wear your teeth down over time. Most people who grind their teeth and clench their jaw are not unaware it.... A bruxism appliance, commonly referred to as a splint, bite-guard or nightguard is custom fabricated to fit your teeth. In order to protect them. #dentistryonbay #dentistsoftoronto #dentaloffice #smiles

WIN an Oral B Electric Toothbrush! Like and share this page and answer the contest question: How much more Effective is a Power Brush than a Manual Brush at Plaque Removal? A. less than 25%... B. 25- 49% C. more than 49% D. none of the above **Post your answers below in the comments section of this post The Benefits of Power Brushes over Manual Toothbrushes Both electric and manual toothbrushes can effectively remove plaque and prevent gum disease if used with a proper technique. An electric toothbrush allows you to brush your teeth with minimal effort whereas a manual toothbrush is more technique sensitive and requires more effort. As a result, power toothbrushes, whether they be high-end units or low end, provide anywhere from 25 to 49% greater plaque removal than manual brushes in single-use trials. Extensive research has demonstrated that power toothbrushes have many advantages over manual toothbrushes for specific populations, including orthodontic patients, persons with impaired dexterity, children and adolescents, patients with hard to access areas such as dental implants, and periodontal patients with low home-care compliance. For example, patients with fixed orthodontic brackets who face the challenge of effective plaque control have been shown in at least eight clinical trials to reap superior plaque removal benefits with a power toothbrush over manual. Gingivitis and/or pocket depth improvement were also demonstrated. Less Force Needed with Electric Toothbrushes - One advantage of power toothbrushes is that significantly less force is needed to effectively remove plaque than is required for manual toothbrushes. Evidence suggests that the forces used with power toothbrushes are in the 80 to190 g/f range, compared to forces in excess of 250 g/f with manual brushes. Prevent Gum Recession - brushing too vigorously with either a manual or electric tooth can cause gingival recession. No pressure is required when using an electric toothbrush, but when an electric brush is used vigorously like a manual brush, recession can be accelerated. Some electric toothbrushes will even alert you when you are applying too much pressure to minimize damage. With the electric brush, you will just place the brush head on 1-2 teeth at a time and hold it there for 5 seconds and let the brush do what it does, then move on to the next 1-2 teeth as you progress around each arch touching all exposed surfaces of each tooth. Better Stain Removal - Power toothbrushes have also been shown to deliver better stain removal and tooth whitening than manual brushes. Equal pressure is importantfar too many manual brushers do a good job on one side of their mouth (a right handed person often brushes the left side of their mouth more thoroughly) but struggle to keep the other side of their mouth as clean. An electric brush will brush both sides with equal pressure

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF INVISALIGN? Unlike metal braces, Invisalign aligners are clear and virtually unnoticeable when being worn. When people hear the word orthodontics they think of conventional braces or railway tracks. However, with Invisalign, we eliminate this type of appearance which allows the patient to engage in many social activities and most people will not even recognize that theyre wearing an appliance. Invisalign is removable. Patients have the flexibility... to eat and drink without worrying about their orthodontics. The removable nature of Invisalign also allows for proper brushing and flossing without the need for floss threading. The Invisalign system uses no metal brackets or wires than could cause cuts or irritation to a patients mouth. You will also spend less time in the orthodontic office because Invisalign requires no adjustments. Braces are more than the means to a stunning smilethey can improve dental health, phonetics, appearance, potential sociability, occlusion (bite) problems, and function. Misaligned teeth are difficult to brush and floss, and substandard cleaning can cause tooth decay and other dental problems. Issues with your bit may also develop when the upper and lower jaw do not come together accurately and these uncorrected bite issues cause teeth to wear, putting stress on your jawbone, and ultimately leading to pain. Using advanced computer technology, Align Technology produces Invisalign, a series of customized clear appliances, or aligners. Each aligner is worn sequentially by the patient to produce extensive tooth movements in both upper and lower arches. Invisalign has certain applications in orthodontic cases and case selection is extremely important in order to determine successful outcomes. Call or email us to book an initial consultation to find out if Invisalign is the right choice for you.

BAD BREATH (HALITOSIS) Halitosis is most commonly caused by bad oral hygiene If particles of food are left in the mouth, their breakdown by bacteria produces smelly sulfur compounds There are a number of common causes of bad breath, including smoking, tooth decay and alcohol consumption.... - Keeping the mouth hydrated can reduce mouth odor - Bad breath in children is often due to a trapped item in the nasal cavity - Rarer causes of bad breath include bowel obstruction, ketoacidosis and aspiration pneumonia - The best treatment for bad breath is regular brushing, flossing regular professional dental cleanings and hydration - Crash diets can cause bad breath because of the build-up of ketones.

Why Should I Fix a Cavity That Doesnt Hurt? There is a popular misconception that all dental cavities, or caries, cause pain. Dental cavities can have pain associated with it, or it can be completely painless. It can vary from tooth to tooth and patient to patient. Dental cavities is a bacterial infection in a tooth that causes demineralization and destruction of the outside of the tooth (enamel) and then into the tooth (dentin). Eventually, if left untreated, the caries ...process will make its way to the nerve inside of the tooth, needing a root canal. Cavity Sizes 1. A small cavity in a patient may only be visible on an x-ray or under high magnification. It is typically painless, but occasionally patients will complain of sensitivity to sweets or temperature sensitivity. 2. A medium sized cavity may still only be visible on an x-ray or under high magnification. It may be visible to a person depending on where it is. It usually, but not always, has some sensitivity associated with it (hold, cold, sweets, air, etc.). It may be painful or completely painless. 3. A large cavity is always visible on the x-ray and 9 times out of 10 is visible to the patient. It may be painful, or it may have no pain or sensitivity at all. Sometimes, a tooth hurts due to a cavity, and then the pain goes away. This should never be interpreted as the body healing the infection on its own. It is typically a sign that a more serious problem is going on. Using pain as an indicator for whether or not to seek dental treatment is a recipe for disaster. The strategy should be to get at the decay at an early stage.

Moms kiss can spread cavities to baby Babies are born without the bacteria (Streptococcus mutans) that causes caries- the disease that leads to cavities. They get it from spit that is passed from their caregivers mouth to their own. Caregivers pass on these germs by sharing saliva- by sharing spoons, by testing foods before feeding it to babies, by cleaning off a pacifier in their mouth instead of with water, and through other activities where saliva is shared. These germs can process sugars in our diet creating acidic byproducts that causes cavities, so its important to avoid sharing saliva with your baby right from the start.
