What is gum disease anyway?? Did you know that gum disease is the MOST COMMON dental problem?? 7 out of 10 Canadians will develop gum disease at some point in their lives. ... Gum disease is generally painless and most people don’t know they have it until it becomes a bigger problem. Gum disease starts when plaque builds up at, and below the gums. Plaque will harden into tartar (aka calculus) if it is not removed daily by your toothbrush and floss. The tartar promotes a bacterial infection which causes the gums to be a little puffy and bleed when brushing or flossing (this is also known as gingivitis). There is generally no pain at this point. As the infection progresses, pockets form around the teeth where it destroys gum tissue and will eventually cause bone loss which in turn cause the teeth to become loose. WHAT CAN YOU DO TO PREVENT GUM DISEASE?? Visit your dentist and dental hygienist regularly for assessment and professional cleaning of your teeth and gums. Brush 2x per day, focusing on the gums - think of it as massaging the gums rather than brushing the teeth - that way you will remove the plaque where it forms! Also don’t forget to floss 1x per day to clean the areas your toothbrush doesn’t reach. #dentistryonbank #ottawadentist #oralcareeducation #dentalhygienist
