Oral health has profound effects on the overall health of elderly people. While oral disease is prevalent in the geriatric population and access to care is a major issue, the extent of OH training among US geriatric fellowship programs is very limited. A recent survey of all 148 accredited geriatric fellowship training programs in the US (Thompson et al., J Am Geriatr Soc, 2019) revealed that most programs allocate only 1 to 2 hours of oral health instruction (ie, lectures, w...orkshops) during their training and only a fifth have clinical experiences in a dental setting. Self-identified barriers to more oral health education included competing priorities or lack of time, lack of faculty expertise, and lack of clear geriatric national educational competencies. Programs with an oral health champion or dental school/residency affiliation had more hours of oral health instruction. The study concluded that geriatric fellowships appear to need more oral health training, which could be achieved by addressing existing local and national barriers. (Thompson L et al. An Assessment of Oral Health Training Among Geriatric Fellowship Programs: A National Survey. Journal of the American Geriatrics Society - JAGS 2019 doi:10.1111/jgs.15755) See more
