Did you know how Treaty Day came to be in Nova Scotia? October 1st was proclaimed as Treaty Day by Grand Chief Donald Marshall Sr. in 1986, in recognition of the Treaties signed between the British Empire and the Mi'kmaq people. Grand Chief Donald Marshall, of Membertou, dedicated his life to Mi'kmaq Rights and served as Grand Chief for 27 years until his passing in 1991

What is a treaty? A treaty is an agreement made between the Government, Indigenous groups, and often provinces and territories, which define ongoing rights and obligations. Check out this image of the 1752 Peace and Friendship Treaty (credit: Nova Scotia Archives). This treaty was signed between the Mi'kmaq people of Shubenacadie, and the governor of Nova Scotia on October 1st, 1752. It reaffirmed earlier treaties, and called for an end to hostilities, and contained provisio...ns regarding hunting, fishing and trading. #TreatyDay2020 Learn more here: https://archives.novascotia.ca/mikmaq/

Today, October 1st, is Treaty Day and also marks the beginning of Mi'kmaq History Month. Treaty Day is a time to recognize the Treaties signed between our Mi'kmaq people and the British Empire. It is also an opportunity to learn about Treaty rights, and start conversations about our shared history. Throughout the day, we will be sharing information in celebration of #treatyday. Follow along, and maybe you will learn something new.... Given what is taking place within the Nova Scotia fishery, today is especially important to take the opportunity to learn, share information and create conversations.

We love seeing people wearing their orange shirts to recognize and honour those who have been impacted by residential schools. Shoutout to Best Buy (Cape Breton) for purchasing orange shirts for their team to wear today, and also making a donation to Reconciliation Canada. Proceeds from their orange shirt purchase go directly to the children at Maupeltuewey Kina'matno'kuom (Membertou School). Let us see YOUR orange shirts by either posting your photo in the comment section ...below OR tagging us! #EveryChildMatters
