Happy Diwali, a Festival of Lights. What Do People Do? Many Canadians celebrate Diwali, which is known as the Festival of Lights. It is a joyous festival that attracts plenty of media and public attention in Canada. Various community groups, businesses, schools and associations celebrate Diwali each year. Some companies have corporate Diwali dinners and some communities organize carnivals or gatherings that feature firework displays. Many Diwali festivals feature dances, st...reet lighting, and plays. Many women wear fine jewelry and silk outfits to celebrate Diwali. Some women and girls use mehendi, which is a temporary henna decoration, on their palms. Many homes that celebrate Diwali have assorted sweets, savories and Diwali herbs. Various lights, candles and sparklers are lit inside and outside homes, particularly in courtyards, on Diwali. Public Life Diwali is not a nationwide public holiday in Canada but it is a large festival celebrated in many towns and cities. There may be traffic congestion and parking places may be full in areas where events are held to celebrate Diwali. Some Indian businesses may close early on Diwali. Background Diwali is called the "Festival of Lights" and is celebrated to honor Rama-chandra, the seventh avatar (incarnation of the god Vishnu). It is believed that on this day Rama returned to his people after 14 years of exile during which he fought and won a battle against the demons and the demon king, Ravana. People lit their houses to celebrate his victory over evil (light over darkness). The goddess of happiness and good fortune, Lakshmi, also figures into the celebration. It is believed that she roams the Earth on this day and enters the house that is pure, clean, and bright. Diwali celebrations may vary in different communities but its significance and spiritual meaning is generally the awareness of the inner light. Symbols Lamps, fireworks and bonfires illuminate this holiday, as the word Deepawali means a row or cluster of lights or rows of diyas (clay lamps). The festival symbolizes the victory of righteousness and the lifting of spiritual darkness. The goddess Lakshmi, who symbolizes wealth, happiness and prosperity, is also worshipped during Diwali. POC firefighters respond to fires, rescues, medical aid, hazardous materials, and a host of other calls to aid the public. In 2019, POCs responded to 303 alarms. Apart from direct support to emergency operations, our POCs contribute countless hours of volunteer time in support of community activities such as Langley Community Days. Our POC firefighters and POC officers are trained to nationally recognized standards. To apply you must: Be at least 19 years of age on the date of your application. Eligible for employment in Canada. Possess a high school diploma or equivalency (i.e., G.E.D.), or a journeyman certificate. Probationary or graduated driver’s licenses will not be accepted. A POC firefighter must reside within 4 km of the Langley City Fire Hall located at 5785 203 Street in Langley City within 3 months (prior to completion of recruit training) of starting with the department. HOURS OF WORK: Varied as this is an on-call position. Attendance requirements are 25% for alarm page-outs and 80% for Thursday night training. RATE OF PAY: $22.11 - $34.74 per hour (2019 rates). Today is Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day, a sombre day of remembrance for law enforcement personnel, as we gather to remember those who lost th...eir lives in active service to the citizens of British Columbia. Today's Memorial Service will be livestreamed from The Bastion, here on our Facebook Page, starting at 1pm. Please join with us to honour the fallen. The Bastion is a Provincial Monument dedicated to those law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, in the history of the province. Law enforcement includes all municipal, provincial, and federal peace officers in BC. This monument was unveiled on September 26, 2004 by then-Premier G Campbell, then-Solicitor General R Coleman, and Dr Chris and Therese Ng. The Ngs are the parents of fallen RCMP Cst Jimmy Ng, and represented a Fallen Hero Family at the annual Memorial event. The BCLEM Bastion is located at the rear of the BCLegislature, in the #GardenofHonour. Co-located n the Garden are the Fallen Paramedics Memorial, the BC Fallen Fire Fighters' Memorial, and British Columbia Search and Rescue Volunteer Memorial (includes British Columbia Search and Rescue Association /BCSARA, Provincial Emergency Program Air/PEP AIR, and Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue /RCMSAR). These nearby monuments honour members of those professions and callings, who have also fallen in the line of duty, in service to the province of BC. The Garden is open to those who wish to pay their respects and honour the fallen. Please see https://www.leg.bc.ca/learn-about-/visiting-the-legislature for further information on the Legislature grounds. On September 24, 1998, the Government of Canada officially proclaimed the last Sunday of September of every year as Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day. The Solicitor General of Canada stated that a formal, national Memorial Day gives Canadians an opportunity each year to formally express appreciation for the dedication of Police and Peace Officers, who make the ultimate, tragic sacrifice to keep communities safe. Under normal circumstances, Law Enforcement Officers from all over Canada gather in Ottawa and march to the Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial Pavilion on Parliament Hill, where all fallen Officers are remembered and their sacrifices honoured. #BCLEM #NeverForgotten #BChistory
