AHS will resume some scheduled, non-urgent surgeries in all five zones beginning in May. Resuming non-urgent surgical procedures will be done carefully and incr...ementally. Ensuring the safety of patients is of utmost importance. Depending on COVID-19 cases, there may be time-limited variations in service delivery and access across the province. Surgeries and procedures will be prioritized using established prioritization processes with most urgent patients and those waiting the longest receiving care first. A centralized booking office will coordinate surgery and procedure planning in each Zone and we will be contacting Albertans currently on wait-lists in the coming days to reschedule their procedures. We understand that many of you will be anxious to hear from AHS on your surgery or procedure. We ask for your patience. Please do not call 811 or the clinic for information. You will be contacted by AHS. We are extremely grateful for the patience of those Albertans who had their scheduled surgeries delayed following our decision to postpone non-urgent procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic. For more information, please visit ahs.ca/COVID.

To current patients of Devon Medical Clinic: We currently have reduced hours of 8 am to 3 pm but we are open. Due to the current situation with COVID-19 and our attempts to reduce risk for everyone our physicians are conducting phone visits.... We hope this will create access to medical advice for all of our patients including those who are on quarantine or are self-isolating due to illness. Please call us during office hours to set up a phone appointment if you require medical advice during this difficult time. As our phone hours are limited and the lines can be busy due to phone visits, we can also be reached via email. You can email us to request an appointment at: [email protected] or [email protected] Please include your name and phone # in the email. Please avoid sending other personal information as this is not a secure way of communicating. In clinic appointments are still available but we ask that you do not just stop by the clinic. Please call or email us so that the situation can be assessed and booked appropriately. We appreciate all the efforts you are making to protect each one of us by following the government regulations on self-isolating and social distancing.

Dear Patients, Alberta has had it's first cases of the novel Coronavirus known as COVID-19. If we are to limit its spread, we are going to have to pull together as a community. To this end, we have compiled responses to frequently asked questions to help our patients make the right decisions to achieve this goal. 1) Am I going to die if I contract the coronavirus?... A: Contracting the coronavirus is not a death sentence. Estimated fatality rates are in the range of around 2% worldwide. This means 2 out of 100 people infected will die from it. These are usually sickly people with compromised immune systems (elderly patients; patients with poorly controlled diabetes, cancer or autoimmune diseases). 2) What should I do if I think I have the coronavirus? A: If you are experiencing influenza like symptoms (fever, coughing, runny nose, excessive sneezing, sore throat), and you have travelled anywhere outside of Canada (or been in close contact with someone who has outside Canada) in the past 2 weeks then call Healthlink (8-1-1). You will be directed to a testing centre, or a home care nurse or paramedic will be sent to your home to test you for coronavirus. You will also be instructed to 'self isolate.' This means, stay at home and limit your contact to others in your home to avoid spread of the virus as far as possible. Going to your doctor's office will only cause further spread of the virus. The overwhelming majority of people who contract coronavirus will experience it like any other flu, and will recover from it spontaneously after a few days, like any other flu. If your symptoms are significantly worse than what you've experienced with flu in the past (ie severe shortness of breath, severe weakness, difficulty staying conscious etc), then - and only then - is a visit to the emergency department warranted. If you are uncertain whether your symptoms are severe enough to warrant an emergency department visit, call Healthlink. Their trained healthcare professionals will help you make the most appropriate decision. In summary: Coronavirus has arrived in Alberta. No, we are not afraid of it. Yes, we are taking it seriously but we are not panicking, and we encourage you to do the same. This is no different to the influenza viruses we encounter every flu season. It is not more contagious, and it is not more deadly. Most of the hype is because this is a new virus, and we don't yet have a vaccine for it. Seasonal influenza is still a much greater public health concern, and if you haven't gotten your flu shot yet, we highly recommend you do so. We wish you all the best, and remember to wash your hands effectively and frequently. Please share this post far and wide so we can spread the word as far as possible. Dear valued patient, The UCP Government has proposed major income reductions to physicians starting on February 1st, 2020. They have given us until December 20th 2019 to respond. They intend to cut $262 million in fees to doctors annually, and $224 million of this is aimed directly at family doctors. That means they are expecting family doctors and their patients to take 85% of the hit by cutting fees directed towards YOUR family medicine care and preventative care. Moreover,... it disproportionately affects the caring and conscientious family doctors who spend more time with their patients. The UCP government is also proposing direct cuts to patient services they once paid for; for example - mandatory driver’s medicals for seniors over the age 75 are no longer subsidized by the government and seniors will have to pay out of pocket for these assessments and forms. If these proposals go through, it will be nearly impossible for family doctors to have a financially viable practice if they spend more than 15 minutes on each patient’s visit (that 15 minutes includes face-to-face time with patients as well as the paperwork attached to each and every visit). Some family doctors will stop practising, some clinics will close their doors and individuals with complex health concerns will be left with overworked physicians and shorter appointment times The consequences will be felt hardest by our most complex and vulnerable patients. But all patients will be affected. We have strong evidence that health care systems with strong primary care have the best health outcomes. I love my career practising family medicine. It is truly an honour to have my patients trust me to help them and their beloved families and it is a privilege that I do not take for granted. It comes with responsibilities 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I’m sharing this with you today because I value your health and I would like the ability to give it the time it needs and deserves. The devastation these unilateral Alberta Health impositions will wreak cannot be overstated. - Dr Kathryn Andrusky, President, AMA Section of Family Medicine. I don't want to be a 10-minute, one issue per visit doctor. If you don't want this either, please consider contacting your MLA and/or the premier and expressing your concerns.
