Hey it’s me I’m here! So you’ve just settled into a good read, work call or a show on TV and then ... demand barking starts. Arrgh what the heck do you do? 1st ask why? Are all your dog’s basic needs met? Food, water, bathroom breaks, unforeseen medical issues. Has your dog’s mental and physical needs been met? Dogs demand bark for attention to something. Be it play, food, water, play, frustrated, attention seeking control of environment for eg. asking in... and out, in and out of a door for attention. If all your dogs needs are met then don’t correct with no no, no. Instead ignore and reward and replace with reinforcement of incompatible behaviour as in providing a chew toy. Reward the quiet . Leave the room that communicates I don’t want to be around this behaviour and when you calm down I’ll come back. If your dog follows barking ask your dog to go to place or bed and stay. Provide a kong and leave them to self soothe to keep occupied. This is all based on context of situation. If this is an ongoing issue, seek professional help. See more

Coby is learning his manners. Starting with basics. In his behaviour modification plan is to learn to love his crate. This is where positive reinforcement really does wonders to condition your dog to really enjoy going into and staying in their crate either by choice or on cue. Also training involves managing your dog’s environment, being proactive, enrichment, walks, and being consistent with reinforcing what you do want. Reinforcement drives behaviour.

Ruby likes to chase cats . We started the beginning of LAT Look At That exercises to change her emotional response. This is a slow process with, counter conditioning, desensitization, and shaping while keeping her calm. Dog’s DON’T outgrow behaviour on their own. Puppy behaviour like chewing shoes and furniture has to be taught. The right behaviour has to be reinforced the wrong redirected and corrected. Also if a dog’s family is not consistently doing their homework or reinforcing bad behaviour be prepared for the wrong outcome. Take Burton for example, as a pup he liked chewing on people things, if he had the chance. Now as an adult shoes can be left out. Why, because he learne...d that he could never touch people things at puppy stage. He was given puppy chew toys and taught not to take people things. He also outgrew the desire to take people things WITH TRAINING. In other words, the behaviour became extinguished. This is the desired result. In order to get to this stage, needs consistent reinforcement of desired behaviour. No reinforcement (or the wrong timing of relinquishing rewards for desired behaviour early on) will also extinguish desired behaviour and so the result will certainly be the behaviour continuing on. Keep your dog on a schedule, supervise dogs that are not fully trained or have a safe place for them when not home, reinforce good behaviour, don’t reinforce bad. Dogs are opportunists. Don’t leave unattended food on the counter and so on. Consistent reward based reinforcement training is the ticket. I always tell my clients training will be throughout their life. This is Odin. Odin was adopted to his new family. Not all of his entire history is fully known, but he unfortunately lived as a farm dog, with owners that did not take care of all his needs. Sadly, newly adopted dogs can come with a myriad of unknown and known problems. Odin’s current guardians are caring and doing their best for this sweet fellow. Odin has had health issues stemmed from his previous situation. After several vet visits before I assessed him, guardia...n has now taken to him to a 2nd vet (1st vet would no longer take him) and unfortunately not all was found to be well. I wish he and his guardians speedy recovery. Stay calm, keep them warm and give them comfort as his current guardian is. The best you can do is be your pet’s best advocate when your dog is anxious due to known and unknown prognosis. Most importantly is the relationship you have with your vet.
