This year we are commemorating the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin, and more importantly, the discovery of an incredible, almost miraculous, change in life expectancy and quality of life for millions of people around the world. However, insulin is not enough. It’s the starting line, not the finish line for diabetes. We can’t wait another 100 years to End Diabetes. Today we celebrate World Diabetes Day! Since 1991, November 14 has served as a day that unites the global diabetes community to raise awareness. The date was c...hosen in honour of the birthday of Canadian Sir Frederick G. Banting, who, along with Dr. Charles Best (founder of the Canadian Diabetes Association now known as Diabetes Canada), JJR Macleod and James Collip, are credited with the discovery of insulin. To celebrate World Diabetes Day, Diabetes Canada will hold two major virtual events on Nov. 14: 1. The annual Best Banting Gala is now a virtual Soirée http://dbts.ca/3ptN50Ch1Rk 2. Rekindle the Flame of Hope, virtual Facebook event http://dbts.ca/Vsj150Ch1Wa To show your support, light your house with blue lights, wear blue and share your personal stories to add your voice to the thousands of others who will be uniting for the day.
