The date was c...hosen in honour of the birthday of Canadian Sir Frederick G. Banting, who, along with Dr. Charles Best (founder of the Canadian Diabetes Association now known as Diabetes Canada), JJR Macleod and James Collip, are credited with the discovery of insulin.
