Alright -here we go! Nate on his first steer, he did pretty good. Heather doing barrels, she just started this horse on barrels 3 weeks ago! It’s been a long day, but we spent it with great friends! No talk of COVID- that was a win all on its own!!

Proven does not always mean in the arena. In a world of fad breeding & extremely specialized equine sports, have we lost appreciation for the jack of all tra...des horse? The true ranch versatility animal. The all around athlete. A horse that does it all. One you can use to doctor cattle off of. One you can use to turn back all day long. One that has work boots for hooves and does not tire after being saddled for eight hours. One that is sturdy, gritty, and smart. One that can shake the earth when he stops, turn on a dime, hold a cow. One that can trek through a Montana blizzard, hock deep mud, and across hard mountain terrain, and never take a lame step. This is why I ride a Hancock. The work truck of the equine industry, the Hancock may not always be as pretty as his black type pedigree stablemates. His roan coat may show his scars and marks from his life in the pasture. He may never be one that you’ll find at a major futurity... but he’s the one you get out and saddle when there is a job to do. A favorite of ranchers in some of the most remote & ruthless country, who needed a horse that would be sure footed over rough terrain. One that would not balk at 100 degree temps or frigid wind chills and knee deep snow. One with enough mass and bone to withstand the elements and a lifetime on the range. There is no prize money for the job these horses do. No national title. No blue ribbon or bronze trophy. A good using horse will show his worth and earn his keep in other ways. There is no LTE. No record of his accomplishments. But he is as essential to every rancher as the truck they haul with. Photo credit: Lee Mullen
