Thank you to my dear friend and fellow author Meghan Redmile for recommending Somewhere Picking Dandelions in The Bookworm Challenge. What a wonderful surprise it is to read these comments from a writer so tremendously dedicated to her craft. And she takes such beautiful photos too!
I will be at the White Water Gallery in North Bay next Tuesday, reading from Somewhere Picking Dandelions. Everyone is welcome, see details below.
There was never any doubt in my mind that I would end up dedicating my first novel to my mum. After all, in many ways, Somewhere Picking Dandelions is about the relationship between a daughter and her mother. In other ways, it was her endless support and encouragement that inspired me to write in the first place. I always knew how I wanted the dedication to read. Something simple, yet meaningful. Growing up, there was an exchange in our household, usually said in jest after M...um did something small for us, like signing a permission slip or bringing home a special treat. Who’s your favourite mum? she would ask, and one of us four kids would reply, My only mum. It wasn’t meant to sound mean or sarcastic. Even from a young age, I knew how fortunate I was to have someone in my life who encouraged me to be, well, me. Someone who allowed me to choose a background of bright, neon lights for my school portrait, when everyone else wanted plain blue. Someone who listened patiently for three months each year as I planned my Halloween costume, and who didn’t completely freak out after I (accidentally) set the house on fire when I was fifteen. Someone who boarded a ferry in the early morning hours to meet me at my island home and take care of me during one of the most terrifying moments of my life, and who later flew across the country to cheer me on during my proudest. Today, many of us will celebrate the women in our lives whose hard work, dedication, and sacrifices allow us to shine. I would like to acknowledge my mother, the strong, beautiful and intelligent woman who everyday continues to teach me the value of self-worth, love, and kindness. Happy Mother’s Day to Mum, my favourite mum, my only mum.
Sometimes, ordinary Wednesdays bring big surprises. Today, I am delighted to announce that my novel, Somewhere Picking Dandelions, has been shortlisted for a Northern Lit Award!
2016 was an amazing year! Thank you to Laura and Heather from Latitude 46 Publishing for featuring my debut novel alongside the works of two other brilliant authors, Shawna Diane Partridge and Danielle Daniel. I hope 2017 proves to be an even more incredible year for all of you!
Thank you to Latitude 46 Publishing for featuring my experience with healing through the editing process in their latest blog.
Please join me on Wednesday night at the Greater Sudbury Public Library, where I will be sharing the inspiration and creative process behind my novel Somewhere Picking Dandelions.
Some stories are more difficult to tell than others. This week I visited CBC Radio, where I shared the darkest chapter of my own life’s story. Under the compassionate guidance of host Markus Schwabe, I publicly discussed for the first time the personal and painful experience that set me on the path to becoming a published author. Many thanks to Morning North and producer Jan Lakes for their support, kindness, and encouragement. You can listen to both parts of my interview h...ere: http://www.cbc.ca//surviving-vicious-attack-by-a-masked-pu http://www.cbc.ca//healing-the-emotional-wounds-of-a-vicio
