I would like to wish a heartfelt Happy Thanksgiving to all of our friends to the South. 2020 has been a challenging year for so many. This year more than ever is a time to be thankful for all that we do have. May your day be filled with laughter, feasts, family and hopefully a couple decent football games <3
We just received a couple beautiful shots of some of our CertiSplit #1 Grade, Western Red Cedar 18" Heavy Handsplit Shakes, freshly installed on a home in York, PA. The contrast of the shakes and the stone façade looks fantastic! If you're in the market for cedar shakes or shingles, give us a call at 1-877-850-1767 or send us any questions at [email protected]
Direct Cedar would like to wish all the veterans in Canada a happy Remembrance Day and all the veterans in America a happy Veterans Day. Thank you for your service and your sacrifice <3
Are you ever curious what a Western Red Cedar roof looks like when it weathers? I got a call today from a gentleman in Texas inquiring about pricing on 1" thick "Jumbo" Handsplit & Resawn Shakes. That reminded me of a project we supplied a few years back to the Homestead Cafe in Waco, Texas. Below are a couple photos from back then when the 1 1/4" Jumbo shakes were freshly installed. The last photo shows how the shakes look after a couple of years in the sun!
Most Handsplit Shakes manufactured today are much more uniform and refined than they used to be over a century ago thanks to improved and automated manufacturing techniques. That being said, we occasionally need to replace some shakes on historical buildings that require them to look more authentic. This was the case with the shakes for the Frank Melville Memorial Park in Setauket, NY. Have a look at these rustic beauties, installed on a home originally designed by Richard Havilland Smythe. Custom cut "crooked" shakes were used for siding. Our standard 24" Heavy Handsplit Shake was used for the roof. They turned out great!
We'd like to give a shout out to the wonderful folks at Lions Camps at Teresita Pines in Valeyrmo, California for letting us be a part of their historical restoration. Here are a couple photos of their newly made 36" x 6" x 1/4" Western Red Cedar Straight Split Shakes. Beautiful! If you'd like to learn more about their camp and what they have to offer, check out their website at www.campteresitapines.org.
There are few projects more rewarding for us then when we have the opportunity to work on restoring a little piece of history. One great part about a lot of these jobs is that they often require us to match the original hand split shakes originally installed a century ago or more, which very often were much longer or thicker than we see on the market today. Here is a sneak preview photo of some 48" blanks, soon to be resawn to 1 1/2" thickness. They are destined for a roof in the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park in Skagway, Alaska. Look at how beautiful and straight that grain is! Stay tuned for more!!!
One of my favourite parts of this line of work is occasionally being able to be a small part of history. Thanks to our partnership with HistoriCorps, Direct Cedar Supplies gets to enjoy this experience a few times per year. A big thank you to them for sending us these photos from a couple of their historical restorations from this year. The first photo is of some Western Red Cedar, #1 5X shingles, installed on The Farnsley-Moreman Landing in Louisville, KY. Originally bu...ilt in 1838, the Farnsely-Moreman landing, one of the largest farms in Jefferson county at the time (1500 acres) served as a river transportation and trading hub between 1820 and 1890 The second photo is of some of our Western Red Cedar 24" Handsplit & Resawn Shakes, installed on the Lake Sherwood Recreation area in Greenbrier County, WV. Originally settled by Richard Rider and Jane Dixon Rider in 1790, Lake Sherwood has served campers, hikers and families alike for centuries.
