Hey! Did you know...?#DiscoverTipTuesdays #diabetesawareness #diabetesawarenessmonth November is Diabetes awareness month. A disease that affects 11 million Canadians. I'm sure you or someone you know has this disease. But did you know that often the first signs of Diabetes are detected in your eyes? People with diabetes can develop something called Diabetic Retinopathy. This occurs when the blood vessels in the eyes leak blood or fluid, and new abnormal blood vessels for...m, which can damage the retina. This sadly can eventually lead to blindness. Early detection is extremely important in preventing serious complications. During your eye exam, your retina is screened for signs of diabetes. We also take a high-resolution image of your retina, so we can not only "zoom in" on your blood vessels and examine them with you, but we also can compare the images year to year looking for any changes. If there are signs of diabetic retinopathy, we will refer you to an ophthalmologist for treatment. How is Diabetic Retinopathy treated? In the early stages, your retina is monitored through regular eye health examinations at least every year. If it progresses, it may be treated with intraocular injections of anti-VEGF therapy (Lucentis or Avastin), or laser therapy. A bright beam of light is focused on the retina causing a laser burn that seals off the leaky blood vessel. Unfortunately, these burns also cause blind spots in our vision. Hey! Did You Know...? #discovertiptuesdays Continuing on with our month of Diabetes awareness, I wanted to add some more details about Diabetes and our Eyes. Last time I talked about Diabetic Retinopathy, or what happens to the blood vessels in the retina with diabetes. But did you know that Diabetes also increases our risk of Cataracts at an earlier age? Diabetes also increases our risk of developing Glaucoma by 2x. Your eyes might also have a dramatic change in vision. ... They might become more nearsighted or more farsighted, and you might even develop double vision. There are many risk factors for developing diabetes. These include smoking, Hypertension, drinking alcohol, family history of diabetes and pregnancy. If you are diagnosed with diabetes, be sure to see your optometrist for a thorough eye examination, and at least once a year after that. #diabetesretinopathy #diabetesawarenessmonth #diabetesawareness #healthyeyes #discovereyecareabbotsford #canadianoptometry #abbotsfordoptometrist

Hey! Did you know...? #discovertiptuesday Back to school can unfortunately mean higher chances of pink eye or conjunctivitis for our kids. Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva (the clear tissue that covers the white part of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelids). Conjunctivitis can be very contagious. It is not uncommon to see all family members with this.... It is usually caused from a virus or a bacteria. It is more common when you are fighting a cold or have a low immune system. Viral conjunctivitis causes lots of tears, burning red eyes with watery discharge. Bacterial conjunctivitis causes lots of pus, with itchy sore red eyes. It is important to rule out allergies or dry eyes or a chemical irritation as the other causes of pink eyes. Book an appointment with your optometrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment. #discovereyecareabbotsford #healthyeyes #healthyeyetips #abbotsfordoptometrist #abbotsford #canadianoptometry #YVR #backtoschool
