One of the less appreciated features of Moul Falls is the rockfall and hanging bryophyte gardens of the cave. These delicate communities are sensitive to exploring feet and fingers. Take only photos and don’t even leave footprints

As the rivers fill with spring runoff we look forward to opening Discover Wells Gray later this spring/summer once the pandemic restrictions ease. Acknowledging the difficult times its good to see some sign that spring is on the way. Here are the first flowers of the season - sagebrush buttercup (Ranunculus glaberrimus) in Kelowna some 250km south of Wells Gray.

I discovered this rare phenomenon of a snow roller or snow donut on the Adams Lake Road on February 3. These only occur with very specific conditions of moisture, snow and temperature, and in this case gravity having formed by rolling down a steep bank. The closer image shows a pen for scale it was about 52cm in diameter.

The ice cone can reach 40m in height! Come later in the winter after an extended cold period.

Absolutely thrilling to meet a Grizzly whilst still at a safe distance. A good sign is when they resume normal behaviour - in this case foraging for small mammals.

A wetter season has brought out fungi like I’ve rarely seen.
