A breaching humpback is one of those remarkable once in a lifetime sightings that you will never forget. The scientific name for Humpback Whales is Megaptera novaeangliae which translates to Big-winged New Englander - it is believed that this name came from the Atlantic population of the whales - who Europeans would have been more likely to see on their journeys. Any guesses as to why ‘winged’? Discovery Marine Safaris ... We love this image - It really illustrates how we all need to take time to absorb the importance of social responsibility and environmental sustainability while enjoying local trails with our immediate household members or bubble. Now is the time to protect our communities #staylocal, #supportlocal and #shoplocal

It is such a privilege to observe these majestic giants and fascinating to see how the numbers of humpback whales are adopting this learned feeding behaviour. This is is why we are committed to ensuring that each of our tours count towards education, research and conservation. Thank you Marine Education & Research Society

This big guy is protecting his territory and we are being asked to do the same. Like you, we love to socialize and we’re passionate about exploring BC and Vancouver Island. But now is not the time for get-togethers or inter-community travel; please help protect our and your community and support local businesses if you can. We look forward to welcoming visitors to Campbell River and catching up with friends when the time is right to #discovercampbellriver and #explorebc. U...ntil then we still want to engage and have some fun, we're all in this together . . . so who can tell us the name of the naturalist the Steller Sea Lion was named after? We have more and more humpback whales returning to our area. That's fantastic! But we have to be aware that they need their room as this video clearly shows.

#FridayFun Both genders of Humpback Whales make noises and sounds to communicate. But only the males "sing" complex songs that are usually about 20 minutes in length and repeated for up to 24 hours at a time . . . Fact or Fiction? And just for some extra fun - can anyone identify who this is? He is known for his treks between Telegraph Cove (where his mom first brought him) and Campbell River where he is known to spend a great deal of his time when visiting feeding grounds. ...He has been featured in the Campbell River Mirror for breaching in front of the City and is certainly a survivor, having had at least two encounters with vessels that we know of and an entanglement with a crab trap off Cortes Island. He is one of our Campbell River Locals! taken by a naturalist with a telephoto lens and cropped Discovery Marine Safaris #HumpbackWhales #Humpbacks #Whales #FactFriday #FictionFriday #CampbellRiver #CampbellRiverMirror #DiscoverCampbellRiver #CortesIsland

#FridayFun . . . Fact or Fiction? One of the reasons that our naturalists use photos of dorsal fins, and always check the trailing edge of flukes rather than just the fluke colouration to help them identify and report sightings of Humpback Whales, especially returning calves is because their flukes can change colour quite dramatically during the first year or so of their life. taken by a naturalist with a telephoto lens and cropped... #HumpbackWhales #whales #FactFriday #FictionFriday
