Educator's mind: how can I plan for this week's schema, "dynamic vertical"? I am going to set out materials that invite children to stack and create patterns by filling jars with beads. National chocolate chip day was on Wednesday and we celebrated by incorporating some democratic practices. Meditation for children? When I went to Thailand, I met a personal fitness trainer there that I found very inspiring! He was strong in various categories of fitness: endurance, strength, power, flexibility, etc., but he also had a very peaceful presence; he just seemed overall balanced. I discovered that he practiced meditation and he learned how to meditate by going on walks with one arm in front of him, balancing a glass cup in his palm. I learned that meditation is the abi...lity to stay present while living in a world full of distraction. There are so many fun ways to teach meditation to children and balancing an egg on a spoon is one of them! Walking with an egg requires your full attention and just like in real life, paying attention to a distracting thought or an external stimulant may throw you off balance. There are various research studies that show the benefits of meditation, from making both brain hemispheres work together, to boosting memory, to increasing brain size, to enhancing emotional intelligence, I highly recommend looking into it! Happy #sensorysunday ! We are ready to add more nature to our classrooms. Planting with children has so many benefits! A benefit that seems to be overlooked often is that children will naturally calm their bodies when they are taking care of plants/ living things. They will become more gentle, careful, calmer, which helps with fine motor skills and emotional regulation. In addition, when adults provide opportunities for children to care for living things, it shows that there is trust in the child.
