For the past few weeks, Discovery Preschool has moved online to keep our students engaged in learning and connected with their teachers and friends at school during this challenging time. Learning about space and our solar system! Our classes have been working hard on a collaborative space and solar system project! The 3-4s class painted the sun and practiced scissor skills to cut out the rays.... The afternoon class counted out and painted over 150 moons that belong to our 8 planets. The 4s class studied the physical features of each planet and painted them (and added our favourite dwarf planet too!) Both the afternoon and morning 4s classes helped to make labels for each part of the solar system. We love making regular trips to our local park to let the kids learn and play outside! Especially on a beautiful, warm and sunny day. Outdoor play is very important to improve physical development. Physical skills are important for growth, physical coordination and the movement of the body. Learning how to use scissors help build fine motor skills young children need in order to hold pencils and crayons, especially as they learn how to write. Cutting also helps develop eye-hand coordination, since they hold the paper with one hand and cut with the other, while tracking the movement of the scissors with their eyes. Meet our Teachers: Ms. Danielle and Ms. Destiny! Ms. Danielle has been teaching for 7 years and loves that she gets to explore and learn alongside her students each day. With a Bachelor of Education completed in 2012, she has enjoyed a wide variety of teaching experiences, though her true passion lies in early childhood education. She is passionate about play and pursuing childrens natural interests, which she strongly believes best support the developmental needs of her you...ng students; fostering inquiry, confidence and an excitement for learning. She aims to help her students make connections to and appreciate the world around them through collaborative projects, community exploration, outdoor play and bringing natural materials into the classroom. Miss Destiny has been working with children for almost 10 years and she feels she is right where she belongs. She is wonderfully sensitive to the needs and strengths of children. She is very observant, noticing when a child has made an achievement; she is quick to step in to celebrate/phrase. When she sees a child who is challenged by any part of a project, she can call on her background experience working with speech pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologists, physiotherapists and teachers, to find a great strategy to help that child find success. Miss Destiny loves being with the kids, and they love being with her. Playing with play dough is a great way for kids to develop their motor skills and is a favourite activity at Discovery Preschool. Its great for strengthening muscle tone in little hands squishing, squashing, rolling, flattening play dough all develop childrens muscles and encourage prewriting and other skills such as cutting with a scissors, using a tweezers, and holding a pencil. Field Trips at Discovery Preschool are an important way to provide new experiences for our students. We aim for each class to participate in 2-3 field trips per year. Our recent field trip was going to Flip Factory to give the kids a chance to play, explore, and burn off energy in an indoor play ground and gym! #discoverypreschool #yycpreschool

Discovery Preschool is a parent co-operative, meaning family and community play a crucial role in supporting our students. Parents volunteer in the classroom on a rotational basis and each family assumes a job that contributes to the running of the program. #yycpreschool

We used this weeks huge snowfall to our advantage, turning the snow into an explosion of colour with food colouring and droppers this morning.

Our 3s has a blast during Sports Day today!

Our classes had the best time st the gully at Shaganappi Park. They explored the various shapes and textures in nature, looked for frogpoles and cooled off in the water.

Our preschoolers have been talking a lot about water, the ocean and the creatures that live within it, submarines and boats! Today we challenged the 4s class to construct a boat that could float with a shell and/or a rock. Creativity and problem solving was flowing in the art studio & one boat (in the middle) was able to hold both!
