Distress Centres of Greater Toronto 16.10.2020

2020 has brought with it unprecedented change in the form of a global pandemic COVID-19. Since the beginning of the country wide lockdown, Distress Centres of Greater Toronto has seen an additional 350 calls every month with an escalation in the severity of calls to our help line in the areas of domestic violence, anxiety, isolation, and fear due to uncertainty and job markets. Alongside this, we have also encountered additional and unforeseen expenses to respond to the glo...bal pandemic by investing in new technologies to allow our volunteers to respond remotely, purchase equipment and conferencing solutions like Zoom. With the rise of digital media, online auctions have become an extremely popular, cost efficient, and successful means of raising money. Last year’s auction had a lot of marketing value. We garnered over 2,000 views of the auction and managed to raise $7,000 in total with about fifty prize donations. All these proceeds have gone to ensuring the betterment of our programs and services. The online auction which will take place from the first of December (Giving Tuesday) to the 13th at 9AM and the contributions made by sponsors will help us at Distress Centres of Greater Toronto be better prepared for the current second wave and holiday stressors.

Today is October 1st which has been deemed by the Canadian government as the day to celebrate our seniors, as National Seniors Day. It also marks the 30th anniversary of the first International Day of Older Persons by the United Nations. Let us celebrate the seniors in our lives whether clients, family, friends, neighbours or strangers by acknowledging all they have given to us through their knowledge, their actions and milestones that have gone down in history, which makes t...heir legacies unforgettable. We at Distress Centres of Greater Toronto are starting the Happy Seniors Day Challenge. Do one small act of kindness for a senior in your life or community today. Call your parents, make a care package for a senior neighbour, send a letter to your grandparents. Let them know today, and always, you appreciate them! Let us know in the comments what you did for a senior in your life today to show you care!
