For this week’s #feministfriday, we’re celebrating #BlackHistoryMonth by taking a look at the life of Portia White! Said to have a gift from heaven, White was the first Black Canadian concert singer to gain international recognition. White began singing in her church’s choir and would walk 10 miles each week just to attend music lessons. Her hard work paid off, as she eventually won a scholarship to the Halifax Conservatory of Music. Making her national debut at the age o...f thirty, White was favoured by audiences despite experiencing racism while trying to book performances. This did not stop her however, and she eventually performed in New York, the Caribbean, France and Switzerland, among other countries. After her professional retirement, White worked as a vocal instructor and was named a person of national historic significance in 1995.

Today, we at Dixon remember. We remember the sacrifices of those who lost their lives fighting to protect the values and institutions we hold dear. We remeber the pain of those whose lives were forever changed in the course of war, be they those who were injured in battle or those who lost loved ones....
