A yearling that's pushing on you, fighting and not behaving while leading is dominant, right? The first years of a horses life are quite important - this is whe...n the youngster learns the most. Even if we don't notice... or we didn't teach something intentionally. It happens quite often that we teach something by accident - commonly this is what we refer to as "bad habits" "naughty behaviour".... It happened to me too... One moment of not having paid attention - and voila, he learnt that he doesn't need to take me serious and can walk straight over me. Guess what, the next time a similar situation comes along, it will be quite a bit harder to convince him that this is actually a NO - GO. Why? Because if something was a solution once or twice, the horse thinks that this is how things work and will naturally repeat it. This has NOTHING to do with that the horse is trying to DOMINATE you! This has something to do with us not being congruent! Not being aware, not being straight. It's so easy to blame the horse. To punish the horse for being dominant. And people are told that they HAVE TO SHOW THEIR YEARLING WHO IS BOSS!!! A yearling first and foremost should learn that people are his friends, that he can trust them and that people mean well. Then we should make sure to teach good habits step by step. Behaviours like crowding, pushing on you, walking over you, threatening at feeding time, are all a result of US NOT BEING AWARE AND CONGRUENT! And not because your youngster is a dominant little monster. He is doing the stuff he does because he wasn't shown and explained what to do instead. "As long as horse does something wrong in your point of view, but you don't tell him, the longer he thinks that he is doing the right thing" It is our responsibility as an owner to teach every tiny little detail about living in humans world to our youngsters. So that they can understand and live a happy life around us. They aren't born knowing how to not run over us, or how to lead politely and not to drag us to the next patch of grass. They DON'T KNOW IT YET! So we have to teach them, not punish them for behaviours we don't like but are caused by OUR LACK OF AWARENESS! What's the first step to being able to teach the right stuff to a young horse? Knowing what good habits to teach when to a young horse. If we don't know, we can't teach. Then we can start to think about the HOW to teach it. And then we have to go out and actually DO IT! One year since we published my very first online video training "The Roadmap from Foal to Dreamhorse" including a yearling filly learning the daily ABC (6+ hours of footage). In case you have a foal or a yearling or a two year old who still needs to learn the basics, you can have a look here: https://my.operationdreamhorse.com/sp-road-map

November 16, 1990, exactly 30 years ago today the great Northern Dancer was humanely euthanized after suffering a bout of colic. Following his passing in Maryla...nd, his body was returned to Windfields Farm in Oshawa where he was buried. His death was the lead story in newscasts and headlines in newspapers throughout North America as racing fans around the world mourned the loss of Canada's most famous Thoroughbred racehorse. His legacy and contribution continue, as so many of today's Thoroughbred pedigrees carry even just a little bit of Northern Dancer's bloodline. https://www.canadianhorseracinghalloffame.com//northern-d/ See more

You don't have to ride your horse. It's ok if you don't ride your horse. It is not a requirement of horse ownership that you RIDE your horse. I often hear p...eople talk - "(name) NEVER rides his/her horse! I don't know why (name) bothers having a horse, why does (name) spend all that money on board, and farrier, and veterinarian, and vaccinations and NEVER ride their horse? What a waste of money!" First of all, it's none of their business what (name) does with his/her horse and his/her money. None. Secondly, so what? Who care's?? If the horse is happy and well taken care of, then it's all good. I promise you that the horse is not standing in it's stable saying to itself "Oh I wish (name) would come ride me!". or "Oh goody, here comes (name) to take me for a gallop". Horses don't function like that. Horses look for and require food, water, shelter and companionship. Being ridden is not on their list of daily requirements for survival. To be honest, I have a lot of respect for people who don't ride their horses, but are still willing to spend the necessary money, time and effort it takes to be a conscientious horse owner. Maybe (name) has good reason not to ride, perhaps they have physical limitations, or too many demands on their time, or perhaps they just don't want to ride. Perhaps they struggle with their confidence and prefer groundwork, perhaps they don't like to ride or work with their horse when no one else is around. Perhaps they really just like to own a horse and derive as much enjoyment just being a horse owner, providing a good life for a horse they love and want to support, for as long as they can. Perhaps we should not judge what people do with their horses, (or don't do), as long as those horses are well taken care of. So next time someone says to you that they own a horse, but they don't ride, don't give them that stare of disbelief, don't put them down or make snide remarks. Instead, praise them for being a dedicated horse owner, for being willing to do what is necessary for a horse to have a good life, for being a good person, regardless of what they do, or don't do, with their horse. Horses need good people, not all good horse people ride.

These two boys are looking for a dedicated and experienced home. They came from the SPCA so I have very limited knowledge of them. They are wary of humans. Ap...prox 15.2hh tall. Both are geldings. Both are sound despite needing their feet done. I was told they’re around 7 years old. Best guess at breed would be some sort of Saddlebred or cross. When we got them they were very underweight. They’re in great shape now so ready to move them on. They aren’t halter broke but we may be able to help with that prior to them leaving. Great winter project for someone. These types are oh so rewarding! each

When the reigning Olympic Champion for the last two consecutive Olympics wears a helmet, I think it is fair to say a new tradition has already been established.... In light of the petition to change the current helmet rules for 2021, we wanted to provide an opportunity for everyone to show the FEI their support. To have your voice heard please send an email to [email protected] simply stating you stand behind the existing rule. Drop your name in the comments here so we can make sure every email is received. Let them be horses. Turn them out, let them run. Let them buck, let them leap, rather in the field than the arena, right?... Give them a herd, even a herd of two. Let them be with other horses, what’s a life without friends? Give them downtime, not just days off riding, but days to enjoy life. Happy horses are trainable horses. Take the rug off, let them feel the sun. Let them roll in the mud, a little dirt never hurt anyone. Escape the arena and explore, don’t stick to the well worn path. The most beautiful places are usually found by accident. Showing them how much you love them doesn’t have to come from buying expensive things. You can buy every rug, all the boots, the best tack, wash them, groom them, feed them, put them in the best yard, with the best facilities and wrap them up in cotton wool, but one day you’ll realise the best thing you could possibly do... ... is just let them be horses.

King Charles, Thoroughbred, foaled in 1937. Grandson of Man O' War who played the horse The Pie in National Velvet. Trained as a hunter and owned by a wealthy s...ocialite, he was offered for use in the film. At the end of filming, the horse was gifted to Elizabeth Taylor, who fell in love with the horse prior to and during production and was an accomplished rider, on her birthday and remained with her the rest of his life. The worst horsemanship is the use of constant threats; looking for a fault to correct and then making a habit of correcting everything you don’t like, until yo...ur horse thinks everything he does is wrong. His confidence is destroyed. If we’re honest, a good number of humans were trained that way, too. Correction has been our go-to language with horses. Some of us think if we are loving while we micromanage corrections, it’s different for the horse. As if being constantly nagged by a passive-aggressive person is substantially better than being intimidated by an angry person. There is no chance of controlling a horse when we have so little control over our own selves. ~ Anna Blake #wadifarmlife #gowiththeflow #bekind
