For all our customers we would like to remind how to inspect your attic. Before you get an offer, an estimate or neighbour opinion check it by yourself. Those easy steps will provide you with an updated stat on your property attic condition.... Hit the save button ;) Gaining access: make sure you are dressed properly and have a flashlight. Check the home interior, majority homes have interior access doors or hatches that lead to the attic. Checking for roof leaks: The best time to check for roof leaks is during or just after a rainstorm or after the snow melt. Existing insulation: the good condition can be described as evenly distributed and dry. Air leaks: the condense air from a warm house go up and cause the moisture Vapour barriers (polyethylene): The walls are lined with heavy concrete blocks and separated from the rest of the building by a vapour barrier, so minimizing changes in temperature and humidity. The vapour barrier will probably be either a layer of kraft or waxed paper or, polyethylene. Ventilation: Vents should be evenly distributed to give good cross-ventilation in four directions. Spring is coming. Do I have to do anything about melting snow and the roof? Owners of residential property, pay attention to the checklist: 1. Walk around your home, inspecting the roof from the ground for signs of damage, sagging, and ageing. Take notes of any possible problem areas or areas in need of closer inspection. 2. Identify areas with moss, algae, and piles of leaves these areas are notorious for causing costly leaks and water damage 3. Keep your eye out for buckl...ed and curled shingles! Hot air from attics often causes shingles to buckle and curl away from the home, putting your roof and home at significant risk for weather damage and poor roof ventilation. 4. Look for missing, damaged, and aged shingles this is the leading cause of roof damage. Missing shingles = direct exposure to inclement weather, plus, they are an eyesore! 5. It is important to clean the gutters and roof overhangs and maintain your downspouts! As you’re performing these essential tasks, make note of open joins and signs of rot, as those are typical indicators of larger issues. 6. Look closely for granule loss (texture on shingles). Granule loss indicates -aged shingles or affected shingles by severe weather. Other words, zero protection for your home against damaging storms. If you find that your shingles are no longer texturized, it’s time to replace! 7. Grab Your Ladder! While on top of your roof, inspect your counter flashing. Counter flashing is a metal, waterproof strip installed over areas in need of additional moisture protection. When inspecting, note damaged, cracked, and shrinking sealant around the edges of the counter flashing. If you find that the seal has deteriorated, your roof and attic will be highly-vulnerable to water damage. Make sure you follow all safety instructions.
