WHAT DOES THANKSGIVING MEAN TO ME AND WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE IN 2020? Thanksgiving. Traditionally, it is a time to give thanks for the bountiful harvest. In modernity it is a time for many of us to gather with our families and feast on turkey and pumpkin pies. While the Covid-19 pandemic and Ontario’s return to Stage 2 has thrown a wrench into many Thanksgiving dinner plans this year, we can all take the time to reflect and count our blessings as we have so much to be thankfu...l for. Holidays and long weekends are particularly lonely times for me as I do not have any family in Canada. This year I had plans to fly to Singapore over the Thanksgiving weekend to spend time with my family and to meet my new niece born a month ago. Unfortunately, the closure of international borders and the demise of global air travel has forced us to remain apart. I count my blessings that everyone at home is healthy, especially my parents who are in their 70’s and my maternal grandmother who is nearly 90. Technology platforms like FaceTime, Zoom and What’s App have made it easier to communicate and connect with one another virtually. These apps have become a lifeline for many of us living in isolation. For me, this is a blessing to keep in touch with family and I enjoy spending time with my nieces on FaceTime! I am also thankful that despite the tough economy for many people and businesses, all of mine have thrived during this time. Showing kindness and greater understanding to one another is important. When one of my tenants lost his employment during the initial lockdown, I arranged for him to break the lease instead of penalizing him and was blessed to find a new tenant within days. It was simply the right thing to do. Some days I feel trapped in the infinite loop of more money, more influence, more clients, more properties, more whatever. This pandemic has taught me to be grateful for what I have and to recalibrate the things that matter to me: Family, Health, Mental Wellness and Relationships. I realize that instead of wanting more and projecting my happiness in the far-fetched future, I have to be grateful and be at peace with what I already have achieved. Here is a quote from Deepak Chopra that I meditate on daily: "Whatever relationships, friendships or connections to certain people you have attracted in your life at this moment, are precisely the ones you need in your life at this moment. There is a hidden meaning behind all events, and this hidden meaning is serving your own evolution. I hope that you too will be able to count your blessings this Thanksgiving. Today marks the 43rd anniversary of the Canadian Peace Officers' Memorial. I am proud to have supported and participated in these ceremonies from 2007-2018.
