Great training online with some of our black belts across the country!
Some of my recent musings...
Hironori Otsuka, founder of Wado Ryu, receiving the first ever 1st Dan Black belt from Funakoshi Gichin. This was 1924.
Buona visione #karate #karateroma #teamkaratebellone #karatealessandrino #otsuka #wadoryu #kata
Part of the proceeds from these sales go to support our SWKKF so please order from here!
Wow this little guy does great!
After multiple years of study it’s so amazing to look at historical events and photos and be reminded that when it comes to violence the same old works. In Self defence one of the initial concepts is get your hands in the face, interrupts attack by invoking instinctual response, brain says get those hands out of there I need to see. Here you see Ohtsuka Sensei doing the same before turning this guys world upside down. To understand the new, you need to study the old!
Karate has helped every aspect of my life... my whole life.
I remember being on the Receiving end of Sensei’s techniques. His internal power was so overwhelming.

I am a Martial Arts Instructor. They asked me one day: what is your profession? And I said, ' I teach martial arts. He looked at me with strange expression, laughed and said gently: what an easy profession! I, with my head high, said firmly:... I don't work in a company, but in a space where I promote knowledge and discipline in children, young people and adults. I don't discriminate, because everyone is capable and welcome. I'm not a boss, but others see me as a leader which I try to do by example.. I'm not a psychologist, but I endeavor to help everyone believe in themselves. I'm not a doctor, but I can diagnose needs and offer help. I don't have normal work hours, because while you watch tv or sleep, I'm planning for everyone to have better learning. I'm not an architect, but I help build dreams and values. I don't scold anyone. I am firm but fair and with compassion I teach them the way to succeed in difficult times of life. I don't use clay, but mold virtues. It wasn't easy to get here, it wasn't just years of practice. It was days of the week and weekends without family, skills, hard training and injuries. All this to become alone in a mirror... someone who is also fragile, who also learns, who makes mistakes and suffers. I'm an instructor - I don't just teach, I share a little of my life, my knowledge and myself. - author unknown
As an Instructor whom spent years isolated then fortunate enough to move around and get international skills and exposure... I always give back to those areas and students where I can. When I set the table, I only feed those that sit at it. I feed the hungry.
Great lessons with Marshall Sensei!
Not so much training with each other these days but I miss you all.
No matter how good or bad you get it always comes down to looking in the mirror frequently and with honesty.

On receiving the Rukyudan, Sometimes we are so hard on ourselves, it is extremely hard to give yourself credit for trying. The time between Dan rankings has taught me this... Your best days are not behind you, they are in front of you. Why, you ask? - Those are the days you can do something about. Can’t remember where I had heard the quote above but it sure has held true in my life. ... Some of the people in my life who helped me on my karate journey of study to date... I thank you. Most have titles like Sensei, Founder, Instructor, Expert and titles don’t matter with my gratitude given to each of you, I know each of them as great human beings first. Ron White Lilian May Robert Johnston Denise Baxter Jack Gingras Claude Dinomi Duane Wennman Raymond OConnor Brad Lunquist Rick Levielle Jack Gingras James Freeman Jim Atkinson Bruce Perkins Steve Taylor Peter Rook Brad Cosby Lou R Karen Taylor Walt Fast Neil Prime Robert Graham Peter Avino Denis Labbe Ron Matte Michel Goslin David Blanchet Sanford DeWitt Randy Quarrel Shayne Mills Kris Reynolds Michael Rust Al Cresswell David Firlotte I’m sure I have missed a lot of people. To those I apologize and hold you in respect the same. In 2016 I had my hip replaced and my biggest supporter over the last 21 years looked at me and said, Honey, you have worked really hard for our family. Why don’t you just do what you love now. Since then and with the best support any human could ask for, I have been living a dream as a National Karate Instructor, National Self Defence Instructor and community outreach with many groups locally in the City of Toronto and various cities in Ontario. To my wife I am grateful for her support and love allowing us to build stronger communities that are connected. To all the many greats out there who have helped me on my way, thank you. This is clearly one of the most significant events in my professional career. Achieving a 6th dan in my chosen art is so far the culmination of my service to multiple communities across our country and to Shintani Wado Kai Karate. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve many and do great things. You don’t have to be a perfect Sensei. There are a million ways to be a good one! Thank you and In Harmony, Darren Marshall 6th Dan Shintani Wado Kai Karate Federation Marshall Martial Arts
The History of the Belt System by Matt Sheridan Originally Published April 2014 (but has been heavily edited and updated since then) . In 1883 Jigoro Kano, the founder of Judo (), began what would develop into not only the belt system but also the kyu/dan system used in martial arts....Continue reading
When training it’s encouraged to learn with intensity and pressure test yourselves. Girls CAN train with men and with realistic intensity. Xenia and Michiel inspire my combative so much. Mature, real and intense people. Great inspirations.
5 Rules to follow!
Richard and Pamela with some great advice and education as a gift to all of us. Highly recommended!
We always need to take into account repercussions of self defense

One of my favourite studies! Chinto done by Grand Master Hinori Ohtsuka in his latter years. Look at the way every body movement stops simultaneously.
Just finished another class with Sensei Iain this afternoon. Iain teaches so well! His presentations are awesome and his ability to work the camera angles for ease of instruction is great! Well worth the $$$ to train with him!
There are many paths you can take up any mountain. Yet There is only one summit. Eventually all systems will meet there. The human body only moves in a finite number of ways. It can be manipulated in a finite number of ways. It doesn’t matter what system you Per-sue , each has some differences in study (different paths) but eventually if you study long enough we all reach the same summit.
Julian has been quite inspirational to me as his knowledge base is so solid! Language etc... is a bit much for most of my crew but if you give him a pass for language his material is good!
ZOOM Karate class starts in 54 minutes at
No matter what you do make sure to check in with your children! Talk about things as they are and be honest with them. They are listening to you talk with other adults (hopefully online) anyways. We are all here for each other!
Many scammers are targeting our Seniors and are FOCUSED targets through texts and calls! Do not trust any calls or texts that you can’t identify. There are so... many the news CTV has informed the RCMP have reported over 80 million in scams and they estimate it is about 5% of actual scams Seniors get duped into. Most do not report due to embarrassment. Talk to your Seniors and help follow up with them to get the proper help they need. See more
Hip flexibility exercises from Jesse Encamp! Great stuff
