During assembly manufacturers often glue larger or heavier components that need to be secured so a good connection is maintained during the remainder of the assembly process, shipping to the store, to the end user and during any other times the unit is transported. That’s great until five to seven years later that glue turns into a brittle corrosive mess that starts to eat away at the circuit board. Such corrosion could cause the unit to fail and if severe enough might bring the unit to its EOL (end of life). If you have a device that’s acting up, have it looked at. You could end up saving a lot of money in the long run!

Today’s quick repair... An Old tired key fob with buttons that have come off their pads. Replacement fobs costs $250 minimum, could be even more for an older car which this one was. This repair was in and out the door in 30 minutes for under $50.

Laptop not powering up? Battery not charging? Component failure happens. In most cases this can be fixed and doesn't require the purchase of a brand new system.

Remote repair! Ideal for situations where a universal remote doesn’t have any known codes for fireplace control. Remotes are an easy fix (and in most cases, a lot cheaper than buying a replacement). No job is too small!

Are you a console collector? Do you own an original Xbox? You might want to have yours checked out. A known capacitor issue may be silently eating away at motherboard causing severe damage.

Surface Mount Plug (SMP) replacement on a Samsung logic board. Original plug was damaged by another Cell Phone repair shop. Phone was given back to the client with no working wifi capability - this plug is where the wifi antenna plugs in. The round part of the plug is about the size of a typical pinhead. #microsoldering

I've seen quite a few water damaged phones over the Summer and the owners of the phone only cared about one thing... The photos and videos that were on the phone which are no longer accessible due to the logic board in the phone being fried. Some can be repaired and function long enough to upload the lost content onto the cloud, however, some can not. Turning on iCloud or using an app like Google Photos is not only free, but also an easy way to keep your precious memories backed up in case your phone decides to go for a dip. Take it from me, the repair guy, it's worth it to backup your data at least once a week.

The usage of tiny fans, alternate light sources, non-OEM multiple port dongles and other handy doodads increase the chance of your phone "blowing up" and either needing repair, or being replaced completely. You may want to think twice before plugging something in.

I’ve said this before, moisture finds a way to get into everything. It will even find its way into drawers and through cardboard boxes and find an unsuspecting circuit board to corrode. This is the story of a Motomaster Trickle Charger. Not used very frequently, it spent a lot of time in a garage, in a drawer and in the box it was sold in sometime back in the early 2000’s. While the unit worked fine before being serviced, the charging light didn’t light up when connected to the battery. This made it difficult for a user to know if it were actually charging or not. A quick clean up, re-soldering the LED and finally, putting a clear conformal coating on the board to protect it from further moisture, the charger is as good as new. Cost to repair, $16 vs. Cost to replace $46.
