Three years ago on June 11, 2017, Dnipro Choir presented our Kupalo Café celebrating the Solstice with traditional choral selections. As the Solstice is upcoming, we share this amazing fusion of traditional and modern dance. Night on Bald Mountain is a series of compositions by Modest Mussorgsky (18391881). Inspired by Slavic literary works and legend, Mussorgsky composed a "musical picture", St. John's Eve on Bald Mountain occurring on St. John's Eve 23 -24 June (July 6 t...o 7 Julian Calendar). This marks the summer solstice, "Kupalo Eve", a time when the veil between worlds thinned, and secrets, the supernatural, and enchantments were revealed. In pre-Christian time, our ancesters celebrated the rituals of Kupalo (god of summer and fertility), songs of Marena (goddess of spring), and flirtatious interactions between young men and women, eager to discover their fate in love and marriage. After the dark section (the Witches' Sabbath), the morning sun breaks through causing the imps, sprites and demons to flee. In memory of Myroslav Skoryk, the Oreya Academic Choir of Zhytomyr, UA, performed the Ukrainian folk song "The Rustling Hazel Tree" by the composer.
