This weeks challenge... Way to go blackbears!
Why do leaves change colour in the fall? Curious first graders found out why today! The days get shorter and we have less sunlight in the fall. Leaves stop making their own sugars and the green chlorophyll starts to break down. After this happens, they start to show their hidden colours, beautiful oranges, yellows, reds and purples! You can see this process through mashing up leaves and adding rubbing alcohol to them. Place a coffee filter in the cup and you will see... all the different colours that were hidden in the leaves. We will see what happens tomorrow when we take the filters out!
Tommorow is Gum Day! Bring in your own gum. Also, $1.00 is due if your child wants to participate in October activities this month!
First Monthly DES Online Auction is open! This month's package is "Falling into Autumn". Included is two dozen preserves (combination of jams, pickles and salsa). As well as one cord of firewood, chopped and delivered within the school zone. You must comment on this post to confirm your bid. Biding closes October 15, 2020 at 8pm.... Thank you to the grade one class for donating the preserves and Russell Robichaud for his donation of the firewood. Please share this post, but remember to ask people to bid directly on the DES page so their bid can be seen by all. All proceeds raised from our online auctions goes towards fixing our playground equipment or purchasing items for students to use at recess. Thank you for your support!
Kindergarten/Grade 1 We had a great September settling in and making new friends. We have been busy and wanted to share some of the highlights! (The boys ended up with the wrong Kindergarten certificates! Ooops)

Terry Fox Walks will take place this week within individual class bubbles. Reminder to send in a donation before the end of the week to go towards our fundraising initative for the Terry Fox Foundation. The class who raises the most will receive a prize and get to paint Mr. Ackerman's fingernails!!!!
Fall is here! Grade one did some exploring outside in the beautiful weather this week. Scavenger hunts, exploring nature and learning about squirrels!
WE HAVE SOME EXCITING NEWS! Our school will be having monthly online auctions this year to raise money to fix playground equipment and purchase items to use outside within our classroom bubbles. We will have a new theme each month. Please stay tuned to see what our first "Autumn" package will be on October 1st. There are some really great goodies!... If you would like to donate to our auction, please contact your child's teacher to let them know and we will work your donation into one of our packages. Thank you for your support!!
Our Terry Fox walk will look a bit different this year, but that is not going to stop us! During the week of September 28th-October 2nd all classes will do their walk with their class only, unfortunately due to restrictions we are unable to have parents/guardians participate with us. To have a bit more fun this year our new teacher, Mr. Ackerman, has graciously agreed to have his fingernails painted by the class that raises the most money. We are asking all students to bring in a toonie for Terry! We will also be accepting any other donations brought in by our students. Each class will total their toonies and donation money. The class with the greatest amount of money raised will be able to paint Mr. Ackerman’s fingernails and choose a class prize. The winning class will be announced on Monday, October 5th.
Tomorrow is Fun Friday for students who paid $1.00 last week. The theme is PJs!! Please keep stuffies at home though. If you forgot to bring in your dollar last week and would still like to participate in this last September activity, bring in your loonie tomorrow!
Students will be bringing home water bottles that were donated this summer to our school. Thank you to all of those who donated so EVERY child and staff member could have their own bottle this year! Please write your child's name on the bottle so it doesn't get mixed up, as they are all the same colour!
Gr. 1 was exploding today! They made some volcanoes during exploration time and had a blast !
Fun Fridays are beginning again tomorrow! Pay $1.00 at the start of each new month and you can participate in the activities for the whole month! All proceeds will go towards equipment for outdoor recess as students are restricted to their play zones and we need more toys to keep them entertained. Tomorrow is Crazy Mask Day! Decorate a mask and make it look as crazy as you like!
Due to CO-VID restrictions, we are asking that students keep toys and stuffies at home this year. Thank you!
Reminder: Student fees are due Sept. 30th!
We are asking our Black Bears to wear blue and yellow on Wednesday this week to show our support for the students of Blackville School. We care and are thinking of you.
We are in search of a basketball net (free standing or one to attach to a wall), to use on our playground. If you have one you need taken off your hands please let us know.
